The 75-year-old Saratoga Casino and Raceway announced a new logo and name change on Wednesday.

After years of planning and community discussion, the Saratoga Casino and Raceway has broken ground on a hotel expansion that officials say will help the destination stay competitive and create hundreds of jobs.

The New York state budget agreed upon this week includes changes to language regarding video lottery terminal gaming facilities.

Lawmakers representing Saratoga County have announced that funding from Video Lottery Terminals will be restored to the county and Saratoga Springs. The city is home to the Saratoga Casino and Raceway.

Thoroughbred racing loses a legend.

Hall of Fame trainer H. Allen Jerkens, died Wednesday in a south Florida hospital due to complications from an infection. He was 85.

New York Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association President Rick Violette Jr. said Jerkens, nicknamed “The Chief,” was "larger than life" and called it "a sad day for racing" -   

In 1975, Jerkens was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. He was the leading trainer on the New  York Racing Association circuit four times from 1957 to 1969.

The Saratoga Casino and Raceway says the 74th season of harness racing will begin this Sunday.

Wednesday's announcement of New York’s casino license site recommendations means one company has seen two proposals scrapped over the past year. But it says it will continue to work as a community partner.

The operators of Saratoga Casino and Raceway have announced a new management deal in the works with Louisville, Kentucky-based Churchill Downs Inc.

This week, Saratoga Harness Racing, Inc. and Churchill Downs Incorporated announced they are working to finalize a new agreement where the Louisville company known for the Kentucky Derby will manage Saratoga Casino and Raceway in Saratoga Springs and Saratoga Casino Black Hawk in Black Hawk, Colorado.

As a key deadline nears, an organization against Las Vegas-style gambling in Saratoga Springs is urging the City Council to assert its authority to pursue more involvement in a planned expansion at the Saratoga Casino and Raceway.

Much of the recent controversy related to gambling in Saratoga Springs has focused on the proposed expansion of the Racino, which is still on the table even though a Vegas-style casino plan is not, and how much oversight the city will have in the process.

Now that a full-size casino is off the table, local government could have less of a hand in the oversight of a planned expansion at Saratoga Casino and Raceway.

Reporting this week revealed that the City of Saratoga Springs and Saratoga County were not listed as involved agencies in an environmental assessment form filed by the Saratoga Casino and Raceway.

With an April 23 deadline for casino license applications in New York State, the gaming company behind a proposal for an Albany suburb has come forward with plans to apply for another license for a casino in Orange County.

New York state has issued its much-anticipated Request for Applications to casino operators. Now, some observers think siting criteria could keep a full-size casino out of Saratoga Springs after all.

The Request for Applications to Develop and Operate a Gaming Facility in New York State was issued this week by the State Gaming Commission.

Casino operators seeking a full casino license under New York’s new casino gambling law must submit their applications, along with a $1 million application fee. The cost of the license is $50 million.

The picture of casino gambling in New York’s Capital Region is coming more into focus, with word that a Western New York company is seeking possible development in Albany.

According to a local attorney, the Rochester-based Capital Gaming LLC has signed a contract to purchase Tobin’s First Prize Center, the long-vacant site of a former meat packing facility located near I-90 in Albany.

The debate over casino development in Saratoga County is expanding, as the town of Moreau is making its own pitch for a possible casino location.

The town of Moreau is pitching the idea to Governor Andrew Cuomo’s office to establish a casino on Mt. McGregor, home to a New York State prison slated for closure in July.

Earlier this week, Moreau’s town board approved a measure in support of casino development on the 1,200-acre facility.

A crowd of advocates and opponents packed into the Saratoga Springs City Center last night for a casino forum hosted by the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce and Saratoga Convention and Tourism bureau.

An hour before The Saratoga Casino Forum began, people started streaming into in the City Center. Members of Destination Saratoga, the pro-casino group launched with money from the Saratoga Casino and Raceway, stepped out of buses waving signs and wearing buttons.

Meanwhile, volunteers with SAVE Saratoga, the anti-casino group, passed out hundreds of red T-shirts.
