The long-running debate involving the Troy City Council's Sanctuary City resolution was almost defeated by an issue of protocol.

Officials in Rensselaer County are combatting the recently signed Green Light Bill, a state law that allows undocumented immigrants the ability to apply for a driver’s license. The officials say they will provide voter registration data to federal immigration authorities.

The Troy City Council continues to work with the mayor’s office on crafting so-called “sanctuary city” legislation even as the Rensselaer County Executive says the county will work to prevent such a measure.

A judge in Rochester issued a restraining order Friday that will at least temporarily block any effort to deport a Capital City Rescue Mission chef taken into custody last week by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. 


    The mayor of the largest city in western Massachusetts and the city’s legislative body are on a collision course tonight over the nationally volatile issue of immigration.

The Democratic mayor of Troy, New York is opposing a proposal to declare the community a sanctuary city.


       The mayor of the largest city in western Massachusetts and the city council remain sharply divided over an ordinance that would bar city employees from asking a person about their immigration status.

A Democratic Albany County legislator has proposed a resolution that would make Albany a sanctuary county.


  The City Council in Springfield, Massachusetts has approved an order directing the city not to interfere with places of worship providing sanctuary to undocumented immigrants.  The city’s mayor has declared Springfield is not a “sanctuary city.” 

Hudson's Sanctuary City Policy Becomes Enforceable

Hudson, New York officials have codified a sanctuary city resolution the city council passed earlier this year. Proponents say this gives the resolution teeth, and the police department will be responsible for enforcing the order. The police chief says not much will change in how his force conducts itself.

Residents of Great Barrington voted to approve a policy that makes the Western Massachusetts town a sanctuary for undocumented immigrants. It’s the result of a citizens’ petition about fears of increased federal immigration enforcement activity. 


    Activists called today for workers to strike and businesses to shut down in western Massachusetts on May 1st, as part of what is expected to be a nationwide protest.

The perception of Albany as a sheltering place for the undocumented began around 2009 and has continued through the present day.  There has been ongoing debate over whether or not Albany is a “Sanctuary City.”

In recent days, two separate bomb threats, both unfounded, have been called into the Albany Jewish Community Center. Activists and religious leaders, government officials, concerned citizens and neighbors gathered early Thursday evening on the grounds of the Whitehall Road facility in a show of solidarity.

In advance of expected changes in federal immigration enforcement practices and priorities under President Donald Trump, advocates fear millions of people could be affected. Steps are being taken at state and local levels to stay fears of roundups and mass deportations.

Kingston’s mayor is proposing a resolution that stops short of a sanctuary city designation. But it does affirm Kingston as a welcoming and inclusive city. His resolution comes before a Common Council committee Tuesday night, after a number of faith groups, community organizations and individuals expressed concern about civil and human rights under the incoming Trump administration.
