John Faso: Rhetoric Vs. Reality

Jul 2, 2019

In the age of 24/7 media, we’re constantly bombarded with news and information, some true and some not so true.  It has always been difficult for the discerning citizen to decipher the political rhetoric from reality, and a new report this week illustrates this point.

Democrats are in agreement that State and Local Tax deduction changes are bad for New York State.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo says changes to the federal tax code led to a growing state deficit and is causing some high-income earners to leave the state. But progressive groups, some Democratic state legislators, and even some millionaires, are pushing back against that assertion, saying there’s no hard evidence that any wealthy New Yorkers are leaving.

In New York, Democratic Westchester County Executive George Latimer was at his county’s airport Tuesday to criticize the partial government shutdown and its effect on Transportation Security Administration employees. He says this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Two New York congressional representatives are reintroducing legislation to fully restore the state and local tax deduction that was curtailed by federal tax legislation President Trump signed in December 2017. The two lawmakers had introduced a similar measure this time last year.

Over the past three decades, the amount of salt in Lake George has tripled. The reason is road salt applied to surfaces throughout the surrounding watershed.

Hundreds of millions of people live with medical conditions that require lowering sodium intake—heart disease, hypertension, kidney disease, and diabetes, to name a few—and research shows most of us would be healthier if we consumed less salt.

New York City plans to start enforcing a first-of-its-kind requirement for warning icons on salty foods in chain restaurants June 6. This comes after getting an appeal court’s go-ahead to start issuing fines. But it’s not the final word on whether the regulation will stand.
