NYS Will Begin A Study of Property Tax Exemptions

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed legislation to launch the study of real property tax exemptions. Hudson Valley lawmakers were the prime sponsors of the bill they say could results in changes in tax status and savings for residents and municipalities.

The first of two functioning reactors at the Indian Point nuclear power plant in New York’s Westchester County is permanently shutting down tonight. It's something that might have garnered some in-person fanfare, but the COVID-19 pandemic has squelched any such recognition. Meantime, two area state lawmakers are promoting a few bills pertaining to the shutdown.

With the New York state budget due April 1, it’s time to reconcile the legislature’s proposals with the governor’s spending plan. On Monday, one of the Hudson Valley’s Democratic state senators discussed aspects of the Senate’s budget, and weighed in on such topics as legalizing recreational marijuana and sports betting.

In a year when Democrats hope to retake control of the New York state Senate for the first time in a decade, there are a few key races in the Hudson Valley. One is for the 40th District seat, where Republican incumbent Terrence Murphy faces Democrat Pete Harckham. Last week, we spoke with Harckham. Today, WAMC’s Hudson Valley Bureau Chief Allison Dunne catches up with Murphy, who is seeking a third term.
