Former Orange County Executive Edward Diana

Former three-term Orange County, New York Executive Edward Diana has pleaded guilty to charges related to an investigation of corruption on the Orange County Industrial Development Agency Board. State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli and local officials announced the charges Monday against Diana and two others, who were ordered to pay $1.2 million in restitution, in a scheme to defraud the IDA.

Several lawmakers in the Hudson Valley are urging New York state officials to set up joint COVID-19 vaccine distribution sites closer to home. Local leaders in the region have repeatedly said traveling to the closest state sites is too far for many mid-Hudson region residents.

The Orange County executive has informed residents that the COVID-19 cluster New York Governor Andrew Cuomo deemed a red zone earlier in October has been downgraded to orange. Meantime, the county executive is hoping to have indoor dining capacity increased as cold weather approaches.

In New York, officials are warning of two separate potential COVID-19 exposures in the Hudson Valley.

COVID-19 clusters in parts of New York City and Orange and Rockland Counties are raising alarm. After announcing some schools in clusters in Brooklyn and Queens would close starting tomorrow, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo says schools in the Orange and Rockland hotspots are under consideration for closure.

It’s budget proposal time across New York as COVID-19 has wreaked fiscal havoc on both state and local governments. Rockland and Orange Counties are seeing some sales-tax recovery and hope for a continued upswing. The proposals don’t include layoffs, but there are property tax increases.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said he spoke with Orthodox Jewish leaders Wednesday morning to come up with an action plan to contain the spread of COVID-19 clusters. A second discussion to set the outreach plan in motion was slated for 3 Wednesday afternoon. Cuomo says 20 zip codes in the state have high infection rates. Among the highest are three locations in Orange and Rockland Counties.

Hudson Valley Counties Remember Lives Lost On 9/11

Remembrance ceremonies are taking place throughout New York and elsewhere today, honoring the lives of those who died in the September 11th terrorist attacks 19 years ago. And for the first time, some remembrances are virtual because of COVID-19 safety concerns. A few Hudson Valley counties held their ceremonies this morning, while others will host evening ceremonies on what is now called Patriot Day.

Dutchess and Orange Counties on Thursday reported more COVID-related deaths.

The first cases of COVID-19 were confirmed Thursday in Orange and Dutchess Counties, New York. These come after Ulster County confirmed two additional cases today.

New York will soon begin the next steps for improving Route 17 to accommodate increased traffic through Orange and Sullivan Counties. The state Department of Transportation is moving toward a preliminary review process. Advocates who support the widening of Route 17 welcome the state’s next step.

Assemblyman James Skoufis Will Run For NYS Senate

Democratic New York state Assemblyman James Skoufis of the 99th District kicked off his campaign for state Senate Monday in Orange County. State officials and a Hudson Valley Congressman were on hand to lend their support. Skoufis is running to replace Republican Bill Larkin, who announced earlier this month he would retire.


A new law took effect in a Hudson Valley county this week that requires anyone who purchases cigarettes to be at least 21 years old.

Orange County is rolling out free holiday bus service for the greater Newburgh area.

Orange County officials say their drug task force has charged a mother and her son with felony weapon possession and another 11 defendants with selling drugs.

With statements coming in Friday from local elected officials in the Hudson Valley about the fatal shooting of five Dallas police officers Thursday night, one of the officials has announced his county will hold a vigil next week.

  Climate activists rallied and marched at the State Capitol in Albany this morning to demand action on the climate – part of their State of the Climate Address.
