The Ulster County Chamber of Commerce hosted a congressional candidate debate Thursday morning in Kingston. Four candidates for New York’s 19th District took turns answering questions on issues ranging from health care to small business to climate change.

First-term Republican Congressman John Faso holds a slim lead in New York’s 19th Congressional district, according to a Siena College/Spectrum poll released Thursday night.

So far, six Democrats want the chance to unseat freshman New York Republican Congressman John Faso of the 19th District. One is 35-year-old Ulster County resident Patrick Ryan, a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point who served as an Army officer in Iraq. This is the first of WAMC’s Hudson Valley Bureau Chief Allison Dunne’s interviews with the candidates.

There is a soft launch this weekend of a webzine that focuses on New York’s 19th congressional district. The focus is on human-interest stories and interviews that meld the personal, political, and cultural. WAMC’s Hudson Valley Bureau Chief Allison Dunne spoke with Ulster County resident Shelley Eshkar, who started NY19Speaks with his wife, Elizabeth Simon.
