In one of the most compelling races in our region last night, voters in North Adams decided to stick with the current mayor instead of putting the man who led the city for a quarter century back into the corner office.

When voters in North Adams go to the polls tomorrow, the choices in the mayoral race will be the same as the 2009 ballot. Long-time mayor John Barrett is challenging current officeholder Richard Alcombright in one of the more intriguing races in the region this year.

The first mayoral debate in North Adams was a verbal boxing match on the auditorium stage at Drury High School last night. It pitted three-term Mayor Richard Alcombright against former mayor John Barrett. Alcombright ended Barrett’s 26-year run by defeating him in 2009.  Barrett challenged Alcombright’s economic development strategy, saying he hasn’t created one job in six years. Alcombright touted his efforts to make government transparent calling Barrett’s time in office “a government of one.”

After preliminary elections dwindled down the number of candidates, voters in Pittsfield and North Adams will head to the polls in five weeks to choose their respective mayors.

Voters in North Adams, Massachusetts have three mayoral candidates to choose from in Tuesday’s preliminary election – two of whom have held the city.

Former mayor John Barrett and businessman Eric Rudd are challenging three-term incumbent Mayor Richard Alcombright who ended Barrett’s 26-year run in 2009. Alcombright says his reasons for seeking reelection go back to that initial decision to run.

“Fiscal integrity, transparency and really opening up government for folks in the community,” explained Alcombright.

Artist and real estate developer Eric Rudd is up against two candidates who share a combined total of 32 years as mayor of North Adams. John Barrett logged 26 of those years before being ousted by current Mayor Richard Alcombright in 2009. Rudd, who ran unsuccessfully for mayor in 1997 and has supported Alcombright, is touting himself as a creative thinker whose redeveloped mill buildings into art galleries and condos. Rudd spoke with WAMC’s Berkshire Bureau Chief Jim Levulis about his ideas for North Adams.

North Adams Mayor Richard Alcombright is vying for a fourth two-year term against the man he ousted from office, former longtime mayor John Barrett, and artist and real estate developer Eric Rudd. Alcombright, a former city councilor spent 36 years with Hoosac Bank and Williamstown Savings Bank becoming senior vice president of retail banking. WAMC’s Berkshire Bureau Chief Jim Levulis sat down with Alcombright in the mayor’s office to talk about the Democrat’s priorities.

The former mayor of North Adams, Massachusetts is seeking to regain the seat after a 26-year run and six years out of office.
