After a strong but unsuccessful challenge to Schenectady's Gary McCarthy in the 2019 Democratic mayoral primary, Thearse McCalmon is now running for New York state Senate in the 49th district. The popular incumbent, Republican Jim Tedisco, says he’s proud of his long record in state government.

Thearse McCalmon this week declared victory in the Democratic Primary for New York state’s 49th Senate District seat against challenger Donovan McCrae. The seat is currently held by Republican James Tedisco, who has served in the state legislature for decades.

Michelle Ostrelich,a Democrat from Schenectady County, is seeking Republican Jim Tedisco’s 49th state Senate district seat.

The 49th District stretches from the Capital Region into the central Adirondacks.

Both candidates stressed the importance of the 2018 election, as the makeup of the Senate hangs in the balance.
