The New York state Legislature built on the state’s 2013 gun control laws Tuesday. Lawmakers are passing measures to extend the waiting period for background checks for some purchasers and forbidding teachers from bringing guns to school.

The state legislature is expected to strengthen New York’s gun control laws soon. Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo says the measures include the so-called “red flag” bill and further restrictions on bump stocks.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has proposed an expansion to his Extreme Risk Protection Order bill to give teachers the power to go to court to prevent a student’s access to guns, if they suspect the student might bring a gun to school and potentially engage in a school shooting.

Things got heated on the New York state Senate floor over a debate on bills that majority party Republicans say will improve school safety. Meanwhile, the state Assembly on Tuesday passed its own set of gun control bills.
