Massachusetts State Representative Smitty Pignatelli has been named the House Chair of the Joint Committee on Environment, Natural Resources and Agriculture – a role last held by the late Gailanne Cariddi. Cariddi died in June after battling cancer. WAMC’s Berkshire Bureau Chief JD Allen spoke with Pignatelli, a Democrat from the 4th Berkshire District, about his new position.

The date for a special election to replace the late Massachusetts state Representative Gailanne Cariddi has been set. Secretary of the Commonwealth William Galvin set an October 10 primary for the 1st Berkshire District ahead of the November 7 general election. Cariddi, a Democrat who represented northern Berkshire County since 2011, died June 17 of breast cancer. She was 63.

Berkshire County is mourning the death of Gailanne Cariddi, a state representative from North Adams who died over the weekend at age 63.

Massachusetts State Representative Gailanne Cariddi of North Adams has  announced $1.8 million in Chapter 90 funding to help municipalities in her district fix roads, bridges and other infrastructure projects.
