Anita Walker has stepped down after 13 years as the Executive Director of the Massachusetts Cultural Council. The state agency doles out state and federal funding to non-profit cultural organizations, schools, communities, and individuals artists throughout the commonwealth. Walker spoke with WAMC about her career, from taking up the role in 2007 to how cultural work has changed over her tenure.

With the coronavirus pandemic shuttering performing arts venue for months, Massachusetts cultural nonprofits and their employees have experienced an abrupt loss of revenue and sweeping furloughs and layoffs. Among the efforts to provide relief to the flagging industry, a new $30,000 fund has been established specifically for theater professionals living in Berkshire County. WAMC spoke with Massachusetts Cultural Council Executive Director Anita Walker about that and other ways state and private entities are working to support the arts.
