The mayor of Kingston, New York is trying to keep his residents safe while looking toward a gradual reopening. Meantime, he’s posing an economic recovery plan to address the city’s impending budget deficit, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Mayor Steve Noble spoke with WAMC’s Hudson Valley Bureau Chief Allison Dunne.

The mayor of Kingston, New York has offered a 2019 budget that totals almost $44 million. Spending is up by 3.4 percent, but the spending plan includes a small tax decrease for homeowners and businesses. Residential property owners with property assessed at $150,000 would pay taxes of $1,461 a year. Democratic Mayor Steve Noble says the budget includes $3 million for a land bank.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo was in Kingston Monday, announcing funding for projects in the city’s Stockade District. The money is part of the state’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative. The projects are intended to provide amenities for the community. They also aim to improve walkability and transportation access.

Kingston’s mayor hosted a forum on policing and community relations Monday night. The idea was to open lines of communication among residents, police officers and police commissioners. Several residents say they appreciated the forum, but there is lots of work to be done.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo was in Kingston Wednesday, announcing that the city is a winner of the second round of the Downtown Revitalization Initiative. The award of $10 million in funding and investments will go toward invigorating the city’s Stockade District.

It is day five for ride-hailing services in New York outside of the Big Apple. In the Hudson Valley, Westchester County lawmakers plan to monitor their concerns via a task force after the county and ride-hailing companies announced a program to create a voluntary pool of fingerprinted drivers. Meanwhile, further north, Kingston’s mayor says so far, so good.

American music legend Bob Dylan is scheduled to perform in Kingston in June. The concert is being presented by the Bardavon and the host, The Hutton Brickyards, marking the first performance at a new concert venue along the waterfront.

NY AG Updates Guidance For Sanctuary Jurisdictions

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has updated legal guidance for sanctuary jurisdictions. Two elected officials in the Hudson Valley say their cities welcome the update and have been using Schneiderman’s guidance.

Local elected officials in Ulster County and a citizens group are among those calling on the New York state Public Service Commission to retain the net metering compensation model for future community renewable projects. They held a press conference Tuesday in Kingston saying net metering is important to their business models.

Kingston’s mayor says there will be an amnesty period for parking citations.  He’s hoping those who participate also will donate food for local pantries. WAMC’s Allison Dunne has more.

Kingston’s new mayor Steve Noble, a Democrat, came into office in January with ideas of change and improving communication. He recently spoke with WAMC’s Hudson Valley Bureau Chief Allison Dunne about his plans.

The mayor of Kingston Monday announced the launch of an outreach campaign to market the city. Kingston Mayor Steve Noble says the “Welcome to Our Hometown” outreach campaign kicks off with the creation of the 2016 Kingston Visitors Guide. He wants local residents engaged in showcasing why people want to visit as well as live and work in Kingston and invites them to submit photos for the guide along with for the city’s website, social media platforms and other tools. Photos from different time periods, of special events, architecture and natural landscapes are encouraged.
