U.S. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer visited a farm in Columbia County today. The Democrat is promoting a bill that would declassify hemp as a Schedule I narcotic.

New York state Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner sees the hemp industry as an economic opportunity for Washington and Saratoga Counties.

In New York, a pilot study of industrial hemp is under way in Sullivan County as some 2,000 seeds were planted Wednesday.

Two more colleges have been authorized to participate in New York's industrial hemp pilot program. 

The program allows farmers to partner with universities to grow and research hemp as an agricultural commodity. The program was launched last year and the first crop was harvested last fall.

Governor Andrew Cuomo wants to lessen the penalties for possessing a small amount of marijuana, and says he wants to promote industrial hemp production in New York.

The Cannabis and Hemp Association has opened a chapter upstate. Billing itself as New York City's leading voice for cannabis and hemp advocacy and industry, the group met last week to discuss the current state of the medical marijuana industry and its future possibilities.  The event marked the launch of the CHA Albany chapter.

New York is in line to become the next state to legalize medical marijuana.   Governor Andrew Cuomo is expected to use the occasion of his 4th "State of the State" address to announce his intentions to add New York to the list of states currently allowing medical marijuana.
