The day after she announced a $10 million Downtown Revitalization Initiative award in Amsterdam and hours after doing the same in Albany, New York Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul was in Plattsburgh Thursday to examine projects supported by the first round of awards in 2016.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo was in Saranac Lake today to announce that the Adirondack village is the latest community to receive state Downtown Redevelopment Initiative funds.

About two dozen downtown business owners and residents gathered Thursday evening to express concerns over the current plans for the Plattsburgh Downtown Redevelopment Initiative and strategize on potential alternatives.

As part of its $10 million state Downtown Revitalization Initiative award, the city of Plattsburgh plans to redevelop the Durkee street parking lot adjacent to the Saranac River. But a downtown food co-op is concerned that the plan to revamp parking will hurt business.

New York’s lieutenant governor was in Plattsburgh last week for what Mayor Colin Read described as the time to end the concepts phase and begin implementation of the Downtown Revitalization Initiative. Read tells WAMC’s North Country Bureau Chief Pat Bradley that an old gas station will be removed within a few weeks and public interaction will now focus on implementation of redevelopment plans.

On July 6th, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that the city of Plattsburgh was one of ten cities across the state to win a $10 million downtown revitalization grant.  At the time the Governor said the plan reflects  “…a sense of vibrancy and energy” in the city. But the Democrat challenging Plattsburgh’s incumbent Mayor says the downtown plan needs revisions.
