   Two seasonal traditions that are sandwiched around Thanksgiving return this week to Springfield, Massachusetts.

The largest holiday-themed light show in the Northeast opens to the public for a 21st season tonight in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Bright Nights at Forest Park has more than 650,000 lights along a three-mile drive through the city’s largest park.  It draws tens of thousands of visitors, including many tour groups. 

Bright Nights is a collaboration of Spirit of Springfield, a private non-profit organization, and the city’s Department of Parks and Recreation.

A new skills training center is being built in western Massachusetts to help put low income residents of Springfield to work and to help preserve an attraction that annually draws tens of thousands of people from throughout the region.

The $3 million job training facility that is being constructed in Springfield’s Forest Park is an unusual partnership that includes the city’s parks department, local trade unions, the regional employment board, and a private nonprofit that puts on the huge Bright Nights holiday light festival.

People in the Pioneer Valley of western Massachusetts will have an opportunity to celebrate the last day of 2013 and bring in 2014 at several long-standing events

A year ago there were concerns First Night Northampton might not survive, but the event with an eclectic mix of music and art is taking place today for the 29th consecutive year.  There are a record 22 venues and hundreds of performers throughout the city’s downtown.

A switch will be thrown at 5 this evening to illuminate the largest holiday light display in the Northeast.  Bright Nights in Forest Park in Springfield, Massachusetts is beginning its 19th year.  It is just one of several events and activities that will be produced during the next month by Spirit of Springfield.  WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill spoke with the non-profit organization’s president Judy Matt
