On Friday, August 18th, Andris Nelsons will conduct The Boston Symphony Orchestra in a program featuring works by Saint-Saëns, Simon, and Gershwin featuring soloist Jean-Yves Thibaudet on piano in The Shed at Tanglewood in Lenox, Massachusetts.The “Simon” of those listed composers is Carlos Simon and his piece, “Four Black American Dances,” is a BSO commission. The piece celebrates the composer’s heritage and the presence of dance in Black culture as a medium for ritual, worship, celebration, and social connectivity.

Tonight in The Koussevitzky Music Shed at Tanglewood in Lenox, Massachusetts, Giancarlo Guerrero conducts Mahler 1st Symphony and “Her Story” by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and Bang on a Can co-founder and co-director, Julia Wolfe."Her Story" was written for Lorelei Ensemble and orchestra, and co-commissioned by the Nashville Symphony, Chicago Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, Boston Symphony, and National Symphony Orchestras. Beth Willer is the Founder and Artistic Director of the Lorelei Ensemble and she joins us.

Tonight at 8 p.m. at Tanglewood, Xian Zhang conducts the Boston Symphony Orchestra in a program of Copland and Dvořák featuring Nimbus Dance.Samuel Pott danced as a soloist with the Martha Graham Dance Company prior to founding and serving as Artistic Director of Nimbus Dance.

Tomorrow the 85th Boston Symphony Orchestra’s season gets underway at Tanglewood. The BSO's eight-week schedule includes music by 28 living composers and 48 musicians and artists making their debuts either with the orchestra or for the first time at its summer home in Lenox. Renowned conductor Michael Tilson Thomas, whose rich association with The Boston Symphony Orchestra dates back to his time as a TMC Fellow (1968-69). He will be joined by the remarkable young Russian pianist Alexander Malofeev in his BSO and Tanglewood debut for Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 on Saturday, August 27 at Tanglewood’s Shed.Then, Thomas will lead the BSO in Tanglewood’s traditional season-ending performance of Ludwig van Beethoven’s intensely expressive, innovative, but ultimately uplifting Symphony No. 9 on Sunday afternoon at Tanglewood at 2:30 p.m.Michael Tilson Thomas is Music Director Laureate of the San Francisco Symphony, Conductor Laureate of the London Symphony Orchestra, and Co-Founder and Artistic Director Laureate of the New World Symphony. Born in Los Angeles, he is the third generation of his family to pursue an artistic career.

A year ago when we were at Tanglewood, Gail Samuel was just days into her new job as the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the eighth in the organization’s 140-year history. A year has gone by.Having helped establish the Los Angeles Philharmonic as one of the world’s most successful and publicly engaged symphony orchestras, Samuel now is carrying on the BSO’s mission of connecting classical music with community. She now leads the Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Pops, and Tanglewood, and will oversee a number of initiatives that will expand the reach and relevance of orchestral music in the Boston area, the Berkshires, and beyond.
