Berkshire Health Systems announced today that it is cutting back the hours on its COVID-19 hotline. With the Massachusetts Department of Public Health reporting 18 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Berkshire County as of Thursday, attention has been focused on the region’s main hospital – Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield. Berkshire Health Systems Director of Media Relations Michael Leary spoke with WAMC Friday morning about the status of quarantined staff members, increasingly limited medical supplies, and the facility’s testing capacity.

Monday night, a nonprofit focused on solving what it describes as the country’s “gun violence epidemic” is holding an event at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. “Reframe: Changing the Approach to Firearm Injuries in America” is cosponsored by the National Shooting Sports Foundation and will address rising suicide rates in the region and their relationship to guns. Dr. Christopher Barsotti is an emergency medical physician at BMC and the founding CEO of the American Foundation for Firearm Injury Reduction in Medicine. He spoke to WAMC about the underlying causes of the spike in suicides, and ways the community can attempt to address it.

Registered nurses at Berkshire Medical Center say they will launch a second strike after demands for contract changes were not met. The nurses say they want improved staffing to ensure patient safety. More than 200 nurses walked out of Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, Massachusetts this morning and onto the picket line. It follows a year of failed contract negotiations.

Berkshire Medical Center nurses intend to start a 24-hour unfair labor practice strike at 7 a.m. Tuesday.  It follows a year of failed contract negotiations, and replacement nurses are being trained.

A hearing has been under way since 11 this morning between the Massachusetts Nurses Association and Berkshire Medical Center in U.S. District Court in Springfield as the hospital tries to halt a planned strike next week with a federal injunction. The two groups have been at an impasse over a new contract for a year. WAMC’s Berkshire Bureau Chief JD Allen spoke with Berkshire Health Systems Vice President and General Counsel John Rogers about the union’s plans to hold a 24-hour unfair labor practice strike beginning October 3rd.
