With hundreds of thousands of gallons of sewage having already spilled into the Mohawk River from the city of Amsterdam's wastewater treatment system, an area Assemblyman is calling on the state of New York for emergency funding.

On Thursday, Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara announced $600,000 in state funding to make recreational and safety improvements at the Plotter Kill Preserve in Rotterdam.

The New York State Veterans App is designed to connect users with information about federal and state benefits, help them find a job, or locate housing.

Republican State Senator Kathy Marchione commended the New York State Division of Veterans’ Affairs for developing the free mobile app.

Democratic Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara, an army veteran, said connecting veterans with services has been a main topic of conversation in Albany.

The app is available on Android and iOS devices.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in 68 children in the U.S. is born with autism. It’s recognized as one of the fastest-growing developmental disabilities in the country.

In a rematch of a razor-thin race four years ago, Mayor Gary McCarthy has been elected to a second term in Schenectady.


Some newer Assemblymembers are using the selection of a new Assembly Speaker to push for change, and have written a letter to the candidates vying to replace Sheldon Silver.

Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara, along with more than 20 other more recently elected Democrats, are credited with helping push Speaker Silver out of his leadership post, when long time veteran members initially resisted.

Santabarbara says ideas include whether there should be limits on how long someone can be speaker. Silver held the post for 21 years before his arrest on corruption charges.

Schenectady's planning commission has approved zoning changes that will help pave the way for construction of the new $330 million dollar Rivers Casino project.

The panel met Wednesday night, giving the go-ahead for development by changing rules to allow casino developers to put up buildings as high as 110 feet and 20 square feet of signage at the former Alco site, between Erie Boulevard and the Mohawk River.

As extreme cold rocks upstate New York, one legislator is calling on the state to create an independent consumer advocate to help bring down high-energy costs for residential customers.

111th District Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara is supporting a measure that would establish the New York State Office of the Utility Consumer Advocate, similar to offices that exist in 40 other states in the nation.

The mills and factories of Upstate New York were often the first step toward a new life for immigrants to America many years ago. Companies such as General Electric in Schenectady and the rug-makers of Amsterdam provided the work for the Irish, Germans, Italians and others who came to stake their claims in America. Many of those factories and mills are gone, but there's new high-tech manufacturing under way in upstate highlighted again by Tuesday's announcement of a $500 million consortium involving the state and General Electric.
