The national spotlight is on a few U.S. House Democratic primary races in New York. One is in the 16th District, where longtime Congressman Eliot Engel faces a field of three. Analysts say his greatest threat is from Jamaal Bowman, and call the race an AOC-type election, referring to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s upset of New York City Democratic Congressman Joe Crowley in 2018. Her race started a wave of primary challenges from those to the left of entrenched congressional Democrats WAMC’s Hudson Valley Bureau Chief Allison Dunne spoke with Bowman about the race.

By now everyone has heard of “the squad” ---  Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D, NY), Ayanna Pressley (D, MA), Ilhan Omar(D, MN) and Rashida Tlaib (D, MI) – four young left wing Democratic women of color.   Ocasio-Cortez is Puerto Rican, Pressley is African American, Omar is Somali-American and Tlaib is Palestinian-American.   All are citizens – all except for Omar were born here in the United States.

In February, New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey introduced a Green New Deal resolution: a set of proposed economic stimulus programs to address climate change and racial and social economic inequalities. Over the weekend, about 100 people attended a Green New Deal forum at the Albany Public Library.
