#SportsReport: Phillies Bounce Back To Top Mets

MLB:

The Phillies managed to split a doubleheader with the New York Mets after absorbing a 24-4 loss in the opener. Jose Bautista helped the Mets set a club record for runs in a game by hitting a grand slam and collecting a career-high seven RBIs. But the Phils bounced back in the nightcap as Rhys Hoskins belted a three-run homer and Scott Kingery added a solo shot in a 9-6 win over the Mets.

Rookie left-hander Adam Kolarek pitched out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the ninth inning to lift the Tampa Bay Rays over New York 3-1 to win their first series at Yankee Stadium since 2014. Tampa Bay had lost 12 straight series in the Bronx, a record since the ballpark opened in 2009. Kolarek replaced Sergio Romo and got a foul out from Greg Bird before striking out Brett Gardner and Austin Romine for his first career save.

The Red Sox were off and face the Rays tonight at 7:10 p.m.

Jon Lester struck out eight and allowed just five hits over six innings of the Chicago Cubs' 1-0 shutout of the Pirates in Pittsburgh. The lefty was 0-3 with a 10.32 ERA in 22 2/3 innings over his previous five starts before improving to 13-5 on the season. Ian Happ's fourth-inning homer was the only scoring as the Cubs increased their lead in the NL Central to 3 ½ games over Milwaukee.

NFL:

Sam Darnold threw an interception and showed some of the growing pains of a rookie quarterback in his first preseason start for the New York Jets, who lost to the Washington Redskins 15-13 on a last-second field goal. Darnold was 8 of 11 for 62 yards but took two sacks and had a couple of throws batted out of the air, including the pass that was picked off.

Odell Beckham Jr. looks as if he has fully recovered from ankle surgery. The New York Giants star receiver sounds like it, too. Beckham says he's back in love with the sport. Giants coach Pat Shurmur declined to say if Beckham would play in his first preseason game Friday night against the Detroit Lions. The 25-year-old Beckham broke his left ankle nearly 10 months ago, putting his short and stellar career in jeopardy.

Tom Brady moved the New England Patriots with ease in their Super Bowl rematch against the penalty-prone Eagles, 37-20. Running back James White and fifth-round draft choice Ja'Whaun Bentley helped out. Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles left early in the second quarter with a shoulder injury after a strip-sack that led to Bentley's touchdown.

Cleveland has no quarterback competition. The Browns have made it clear that the starting job is Tyrod Taylor's but that hasn't quieted the buzz around Baker Mayfield, who had a dazzling preseason debut last week. The No. 1 overall pick will follow Taylor on Friday night and play up to two quarters against Buffalo in his first game action in front of Cleveland fans hoping he can lead them to a brighter future,  just not yet. Taylor gets a chance to play against his former team Friday night.

NCAA:

Coach Dino Babers enters his third season at Syracuse intent on improving from the recent past. The Orange have finished 4-8 three straight times with Eric Dungey at quarterback, partly because he's missed the final three games of each season with injuries. Dungey is back for his final year and Babers appears to have a very capable backup in redshirt freshman Tommy DeVito if the fiery Dungey gets injured again. The Orange open the season at Western Michigan on Aug. 31.

The parents of offensive lineman Jordan McNair say suspended University of Maryland coach DJ Durkin should be fired. McNair collapsed during a preseason conditioning drill May 29 and died two weeks later. Durkin was placed on administrative leave Saturday after ESPN reported that coaches had been bullying the players. Martin McNair told ABC's "Good Morning America" that Durkin "shouldn't be able to work with anyone else's kid." The university said Tuesday that it takes "legal and moral responsibility" for the death.

Federal officials will investigate Ohio State University's response to allegations against a team doctor now accused of sexual misconduct against scores of athletes and other male students in the 1980s and 1990s. The school says the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights will investigate whether Ohio State has responded "promptly and equitably" to students' complaints, including claims that school officials knew about misconduct by Dr. Richard Strauss but didn't stop him. The university's chief compliance officer says it responded appropriately when allegations were made this year about Strauss, who killed himself in 2005.

Hockey:

United States Olympic team defenseman Emily Pfalzer is returning to play for her hometown National Women's Hockey League Buffalo Beauts for a third season. The Beauts announced they agreed to terms with their captain in what becomes the team's latest high-profile addition.

PGA:

Brandt Snedeker has become the 10th player in PGA history to break 60. Snedeker opened the Wyndham Championship with an 11-under 59, one short of the tour record set by Jim Furyk in the 2016 Travelers Championship. He closed with a 20-foot putt on his final hole for a four-stroke advantage over Ryan Moore and John Oda. Snedeker actually began his round with a bogey on No. 10 before carding 10 birdies and an eagle. He played the front nine in 27, including an eagle 2 on the par-4 sixth hole when he holed out from 176 yards.

Tennis:

The Davis Cup is giving players more incentive to compete for their countries in 2019. The event will be decided with a season-ending, 18-team tournament beginning next year, replacing a format that dragged the tourney over four weekends throughout the year. Davis Cup is often skipped by elite players already facing a crowded schedule. The new format will have 24 nations competing in a home-or-away qualifying round in February. The 12 winners will advance to the final tournament, which will also include the four semifinalists from the previous year and two wild-card teams.

NASCAR:

NASCAR driver Kasey Kahne says he is retiring from full-time racing and plans to focus on the sprint car team he owns. The 38-year-old Kahne has 18 victories in 15 years in the Cup Series, including a playoff-clinching one last season at famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Kahne signed on with Leavine Family Racing for 2018 after ending his relationship with Hendrick Motorsports. He has one top-five finish in 23 starts for Leavine.

Gymnastics:

Olympic gold-medal winning gymnasts Kyla Ross and Madison Kocian say they are among the sexual abuse victims of disgraced former USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar. Ross won gold with the "Fierce Five" at the 2012 Olympics, four years before Kocian captured gold. Ross tells The Associated Press the abuse began when she was 13 and continued throughout her career. Kocian says she was in denial for a long time but opted to come forward after watching so many of her former teammates detail their abuse at the hands of Nassar. Nassar is serving an effective life sentence after being convicted of federal child pornography and state sexual abuse charges.

NYRA:

The Grade 1 Alabama Stakes for 3 year olds marks Saturday’s top race at Saratoga Race Course. The Grade 2 Lake Placid Stakes for 3 year olds takes place before and is the eight race of the day with a 5:02 p.m. post time.

esports:

SUNY Canton announced plans to add Fortnite and FIFA teams to its lineup of varsity esports teams following the ECAC announcement formally sponsoring competition in both games.
