Sunday's major league action included a near no-hitter and a pair of strong debuts by recently-traded hurlers.

The no-hit bid was authored by Sean Newcomb, who pitched the Braves to a 4-1 victory over the Dodgers. Newcomb was one strike away from completing the gem until Chris Taylor hit a single through the hole, ending his afternoon after a career-high 134 pitches.

Newcomb was trying to throw Atlanta's first no-hitter since Kent Mercker in 1994.

Nick Markakis homered and drove in three runs as the Braves snapped a four-game skid and pulled within 1 ½ games of the NL East-leading Phillies.

It wasn't a perfect day for Newcomb, who had to apologize after the game for racist, homophobic and sexist tweets he sent as a teenager, calling them "some stupid stuff." Major League Baseball dealt with a similar situation this month involving Milwaukee Brewers reliever Josh Hader on the night he pitched in the All-Star Game. Nationals’ shortstop Trea Turner also apologized Sunday for homophobic and racially insensitive tweets he posted six and seven years ago.

In Boston, Nathan Eovaldi fired four-hit ball with no walks in his Red Sox debut, a 3-0 shutout of the Twins. Eovaldi was on the mound for the first time since being acquired from Tampa Bay last week.

J.D. Martinez has a major league-leading 89 RBIs after collecting three more to help Boston move 41 games over .500 for the first time since Sept. 27, 1946. Boston hosts the Phillies Monday at 7:00 p.m.

Meanwhile, J.A. Happ looked good in helping the Yankees stay 5 ½ games behind the AL East-leading Red Sox. Traded by the Blue Jays last week, Happ allowed one run over six innings of New York's 6-3 victory against the Royals. He blanked Kansas City until Salvador Perez homered in the fifth.

Aaron Hicks was 3-for-3 with a two-run homer for the Yanks, who have won back-to-back games for the first time since July 11-12.

New York has the night off and host the Orioles Tuesday at 7:05 p.m.

Adam Jones had three hits and an RBI in what could be his final game with the Orioles, an 11-5 trouncing of the Rays. The rebuilding Orioles are looking to deal Jones before Tuesday's non-waiver trade deadline. The Orioles took three of four from the Rays, reaching double figures in runs the last three games.

The Colorado Rockies have signed former star outfielder Matt Holliday to a minor league contract. The 38-year-old Holliday has reported to the Grand Junction Rockies, the organization's Rookie level team. Holliday hit .231 with 19 home runs and 64 RBIs with the Yankees last season. Holliday played the first five seasons of his 14-year career with the Rockies.

The Red Sox have placed third baseman Rafael Devers on the 10-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring. Devers limped running into third base on Eduardo Nunez's double in the eighth inning of Boston's 10-4 victory on Saturday night.

The Yankees have traded relievers Chasen Shreve and Giovanny Gallegos to the Cardinals for first baseman Luke Voit. The Yankees also got international signing bonus pool money from St. Louis.

NASCAR

Kyle Busch didn't allow Saturday's failed inspection to stop him from earning his sixth NASCAR Cup victory of the season.

Busch was set to start second in the race, but his No. 18 Toyota was one of 13 cars dumped to back of the pack for flunking post-qualifying inspection. He still managed to tie Kevin Harvick for the most wins this season.

The race was red flagged with six laps left in the wake of a violent wreck by Darrell Wallace Jr. Wallace appeared to lose the breaks in his No. 43 Chevrolet and the car shot across the grass and slammed into the wall. He sat on the track and slumped against the car before he taken to the track medical center, where he was deemed OK.

HORSE RACING

Tenfold apparently likes to see himself on television. Distracted at the top of the stretch by the infield television and drifting far to the right as he challenged for the lead, Tenfold recovered nicely under jockey Ricardo Santana Jr. and held off Flameway by three-quarters of a length on Saturday to win the 55th running of the Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga Race Course.

Tenfold has displayed talent before, running third in the Preakness with a strong close to pace-setting Triple Crown winner Justify in the late stretch. The son of Curlin, who did not race as a 2-year-old, also finished fifth in the Belmont Stakes but was never a factor. He won his first two races of the year at Oaklawn.

Vanderbilt Handicap at 6 furlongs, his third win in four starts this year; and Channel Maker caught Glorious Empire at the wire in a dead heat for the win in the 60th running of the Grade 2 $250,000 Bowling Green Stakes at 1 3/8 miles on the inner turf course, which was rated as soft.
