Indianapolis 500:

A little history was made at the Brickyard on Sunday. Takuma Sato became the first Japanese winner of the Indianapolis 500 as he denied Helio Castroneves a record-tying fourth victory. Castroneves briefly took the lead in the closing laps but couldn't make it stick. Sato grabbed it back and gave Andretti Autosport its second consecutive win at the Brickyard.

The margin of victory was just over 0.2 seconds and served as redemption for Sato, who crashed while trying to beat Dario Franchitti on the final lap of the 2012 race. Ed Jones finished third, followed by Max Chilton and Tony Kanaan. It was only the second IndyCar victory for Sato, who won driving for A.J. Foyt at Long Beach in 2013. Sato is a regular driver on the Formula One circuit.

An Andretti driver has now won the 500 three times in the last four years, and five times since the late Dan Wheldon captured the 2005 race. Fernando Alonso had a spectacular race before falling victim to his engine late in the race. Pole-sitter Scott Dixon suffered an ankle injury in a spectacular crash, one of several wrecks that left just 19 cars on the track at the end of the race.

Boston's six-game winning streak is finished after Christian Bergman scattered four hits over seven innings of Seattle's 5-0 shutout of the Red Sox. Bergman was aided by four double plays from his infielders before three relievers completed the combined five-hitter. Robinson Cano smacked a two-run homer and Guillermo Heredia added a solo shot as the Mariners won for just the second time in nine games.

The Mets got six strong innings from Matt Harvey in winning the rubber match of their three-game set in Pittsburgh, 7-2. Harvey gave up a run and six hits over a season-high six innings to win his second consecutive start. Asdrubel Cabrera and Jay Bruce each hit two-run doubles to help Harvey put together his first winning streak since last April.

The Houston Astros are a major league-best 35-16 after completing a three-game sweep of Baltimore. George Springer homered while the Astros put together a six-run second in an 8-4 pounding of the Orioles. Lance McCullers is 6-1 after allowing two earned runs and five hits while striking out eight over six innings.

Angels outfielder and major league home run co-leader Mike Trout suffered a sprained left thumb during Sunday's 9-2 loss at Miami. Trout injured the thumb while stealing second base in the fifth inning. X-rays were negative, and Trout is scheduled to undergo an MRI Monday when the team returns to Los Angeles.

Pawtucket's mayor says he plans to continue pushing for a bill that would help finance a new Pawtucket Red Sox stadium. The Providence Journal reports Mayor Don Grebien said Friday that he will keep advocating "in the best interest of Pawtucket" for the legislation. The Democrat has been pushing a bill that calls for the Pawtucket Redevelopment Agency to borrow $71 million to build the ballpark. The plan asks the state to pay off $23 million. The team would pay $33 million and the city would pay $15 million.

He capped the tournament with a clutch par save following a wayward tee shot to finish one shot ahead of Spieth, Sean O'Hair and Jon Rahm. The 33-year-old Kisner got his second PGA Tour victory in 148 starts since his debut in 2011.

Bernard Langer has broken Jack Nicklaus' record by winning a ninth senior major title. The 59-year-old Langer closed the Senior PGA Championship with a 4-under 68 for an 18-under total that left him one stroke ahead of third-round leader Vijay Singh. The Senior PGA had been the lone major to elude Langer. Miguel-Angel Jimenez and Billy Andrade tied for third at 13 under.
