Jerry Krause, the Chicago Bulls' general manager during their 1990s dynasty that saw them capture six NBA championships with Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen leading the way, has died. He was 77. The Bulls confirmed his death on Tuesday. A Chicago native, Krause took over as GM in 1985 and was responsible for surrounding Jordan with the pieces that would propel the team to two championship three-peats in the 1990s. He also hired Phil Jackson from the Continental Basketball Association as an assistant to Doug Collins and fired Collins in favor of Jackson following a run to the Eastern Conference finals in 1989.
NHL:
In the NHL, New Jersey edged the Rangers in overtime 3-2, Pittsburgh beat Buffalo 3-1, Ottawa topped Boston 3-2, Arizona bested Tampa Bay 5-3, Carolina skated by Florida 4-3, Winnipeg slid past Philadelphia 3-2, Vancouver won against Chicago in overtime 5-4, Minnesota beat San Jose 3-2, St. Louis doubled up Colorado 4-2, and it was Detroit over Montreal in overtime 2-1.
NFL:
The Mexican media executive suspected of stealing Tom Brady's jersey went to the Super Bowl as a working journalist, but spent the week collecting selfies and autographs from football greats. Mexican journalists who were in Houston for the game say La Prensa's then-director Martin Mauricio Ortega was carrying multiple NFL memorabilia items. They included a Kurt Warner jersey he hoped to sell to the former quarterback for thousands of dollars.
The New York Giants have re-signed middle linebacker Keenan Robinson. The Giants announced the signing yesterday, adding that fellow linebacker Mark Herzlich had signed a new contract Monday. Robinson, who left Washington to sign with the Giants last season as a free agent, played in all 17 games with seven starts, including one in the playoff game against the Green Bay Packers.
A lawyer for former NFL star Aaron Hernandez has aggressively questioned the prosecution's star witness in Hernandez's double-murder trial. Attorney Jose Baez grilled Alexander Bradley yesterday about his claim that Hernandez killed two men after one spilled his drink in 2012. Under cross-examination, Bradley acknowledged he has sold drugs for about 17 years. Baez has said Bradley — not Hernandez — shot the men over a drug deal.
NCAA:
Vlad Brodziansky scored 20 points, Kenrich Williams had the first triple-double in TCU history and the Horned Frogs rolled over Richmond 86-68 to win their bracket of the NIT and advance to the Final Four for the first time. Williams had 11 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists for TCU (22-15), which was seeded fourth and knocked out top-seeded Iowa in the second round. Desmond Bane added 13 points and Alex Robinson had 12.
Quinnipiac's women's basketball team has made a name for itself by winning two games in the NCAA Tournament. Now, the team would like people to start pronouncing that name correctly. Despite what you might have heard on television, It's KWIHN'-ih-pee-ak, not kwin-uh-PEE'-ak. Coach Tricia Fabbri says she expects that the more the team wins, the easier that will be to say.
Notre Dame junior forward Brianna Turner will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury, a major blow to the NCAA Tournament hopes of the top-seeded Fighting Irish. Notre Dame announced Tuesday that Turner tore the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee Sunday night during a second-round win over Purdue. She leads the team this season with 15.3 points and 7.1 rebounds per game, and also has 86 blocks — sixth-best for a single season in Notre Dame history. Notre Dame faces Ohio State on Friday night in the Sweet 16 in Lexington, Kentucky.
UMass Athletics have named Pat Kelsey to be the next head coach of its men’s basketball program. He formerly worked as an associate head coach at Xavier University.
This is March Madness on a whole different level. A bet between two Las Vegas casino owners will cost one of them $1 million if the University of Michigan wins the NCAA mens' basketball tournament. Derek Stevens, who owns The D casino, plunked down $12,500 on Michigan at the Golden Nugget at 80-to-1 odds. Now the Wolverines have advanced to the Sweet 16, bringing Nugget owner Tilman Fertitta closer to making a payout 10 times larger than any his casino's sports book has ever made.
MLB:
In baseball’s spring training, Boston doubled up the Yankees 4-2.
Barry Bonds is back home with the San Francisco Giants. Baseball's home run champion was scheduled to help coach at spring training beginning Wednesday in Scottsdale, Arizona. He will work with the minor league teams, too. Bonds spent last season as Miami's hitting coach before being fired. He will work with Giants CEO Larry Baer.
Boston manager John Farrell says Red Sox left-hander David Price has increased strength in his sore pitching elbow, but isn't ready for a "full-blown throwing program." Price was re-evaluated before the Red Sox played the New York Yankees last night.
New York Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorius is expected to miss the first month of the regular season because of a strained right shoulder. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Tuesday that Gregorius is likely to be sidelined six weeks. Opening day for the Yankees is April 2 at Tampa Bay.
PGA:
The former chairman of Dean Foods has told a New York jury that he fed secrets about the company to a professional gambler for years. Thomas Davis testified Tuesday as the prosecution's star witness against his former longtime friend, William "Billy" Walters. Prosecutors say Walters encouraged friends including professional golfer Phil Mickelson to buy stock in Dean Foods Co. The Dallas-based company is one of the nation's largest processors of milk for retailers. Mickelson, who may testify later in the trial, was never charged criminally. But he did agree to pay back $1 million he earned in 2012 after Walters suggested a trade. The 68-year-old Davis testified he told Walters secrets about Dean Foods for over seven years. Walters' lawyer says Davis is lying.
World Baseball Classic:
Luke Gregerson's final strike breezed past Nobuhiro Matsuda, and the rain-drenched American players celebrated on the field while a soaked crowd roared through the evening mist. A daylong downpour couldn't dampen this resilient United States club or its fans, who will finally get to root for the home team in a World Baseball Classic championship game. Brandon Crawford scored the tiebreaking run when Matsuda bobbled Adam Jones' grounder to third in the eighth inning, and the United States reached the WBC final for the first time by beating Japan 2-1 on Tuesday night at rainy Dodger Stadium.
