MLB:
In baseball, in the American League, the Yankees edged Texas 2-1, the White Sox beat Minnesota 6-5, Cleveland bested Toronto 4-1, Detroit defeated Tampa Bay 10-7, and it was Seattle over Baltimore 5-3.
In the National League, the Mets edged the Cubs 4-3, Atlanta bested Miami 8-5, Washington topped Cincinnati 13-4, and it was the Dodgers over Milwaukee 8-1.
In interleague play, Kansas City doubled up St. Louis 4-2, and it was San Francisco over Oakland 12-6.
NCAA:
Coastal Carolina has become the first team since Minnesota in 1956 to win the College World Series in its first appearance. The Chanticleers capitalized on two errors on the same play to score four unearned runs in the sixth inning of a 4-3 triumph over Arizona in Game 3 of the finals. Andrew Beckwith improved to 15-1 with his third CWS victory, working 5 2/3 innings after pitching two complete games in the tournament. Beckwith finishes the season as the NCAA leader in victories. It's the first NCAA title of any kind for Coastal Carolina, which became the first Big South school to reach the College World Series.
NFL:
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell earned just over $31 million for 2015, the league said Thursday. The amount represented a 7 percent decrease from his 2014 salary of approximately $34 million. Sports Business Daily first reported Goodell's salary details.
Almost a year after mangling his right hand in a fireworks accident, New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul has made a public service announcement about keeping children away from fireworks, and warning everyone to handle the pyrotechnic devices with care. The announcement was unveiled Thursday at a fireworks safety event in Washington by U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Chairman Elliot F. Kaye.
New York Jets defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson has been suspended by the NFL for the first game of the 2016 regular season for violating the league's personal conduct policy. Richardson will be eligible to return to the Jets' active roster on September 12th following the team's September 11th opener against Cincinnati.
NBA:
The Brooklyn Nets have waived guard Jarrett Jack, who was lost to a torn ACL in January. The Nets will owe Jack just $500,000 by waiving him by a June 30th deadline. He would have been paid $6.3 million next season if he remained on the roster after Thursday.
A person with knowledge of the situation tells The Associated Press that the Milwaukee Bucks have given general manager John Hammond a one-year extension through the 2017-18 season. The plan is for him to remain GM through the completion of his contract before becoming a consultant once assistant GM Justin Zanik takes over the main front office duties. Hammond has been the Bucks GM since 2008 and was the NBA's Executive of the Year in 2009-10.
The NBA's free agent signing period has begun as teams opt to keep players or ink new ones. Kevin Durant met with Oklahoma City GM Sam Presti yesterday but gave no indication he would definitely stay with the Thunder. The four-time scoring champ has spent his entire career with the Thunder and is one of the best free agents on the market. A person with knowledge of the situation tells The Associated Press that the Wizards expect to agree to a five-year maximum contract with shooting guard Bradley Beal by this morning. Beal averaged 17.4 points in his fourth season for the Wizards.
PGA:
England's Martin Laird is the first-round leader at the Barracuda Championship in Reno, Nevada. Laird had eight birdies in shooting a 15 under the modified Stableford scoring system. Colt Knost and Zac Blair are two points off the lead. The tournament has taken on added importance since next week's Greenbrier Classic was canceled due to flooding. The leading player not already eligible from the top five this week will earn a spot in the British Open next month.
William McGirt is the leader through 18 holes of the PGA's Bridgestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio. McGirt fired a 6-under 64 for a three-shot lead over world No. 1 Jason Day, Jimmy Walker and Emiliano Grillo. McGirt broke through for his first PGA Tour victory last month at the Memorial, also in Ohio. Jordan Spieth closed with four birdies for a 68.
LPGA:
Defending champion Brooke Henderson shot a 7-under 65 to take a two-stroke lead in first-round play at the LPGA Cambia Portland Classic. The 18-year-old Canadian hit 16 greens and made nine birdies. Angela Stanford, Demi Runas and Mariajo Uribe each shot 67 for a three-way tie for second.
WNBA:
In the WNBA, the Sparks defeated Atlanta 84-75 and it was Dallas over Seattle 83-78.
Tennis:
French Open champion and 2015 Wimbledon runner-up Garbine Muguruza has been stunned in the second round at the All England Club by a qualifier ranked 124th.
The second-seeded Muguruza lost 6-3, 6-2 to Slovakia's Jana Cepelova in less than an hour. Muguruza made 22 unforced errors and produced nine winners, less than a month after winning her first Grand Slam title.
Third-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska saved three match points on the way to a three-sets win in her second round match. Radwanska is joined in the third round by fourth seed Angelique Kerber, fifth seed Simona Halep, eighth seed Venus Williams and No. 9 Madison Keys. American Julia Boserup also advanced when seventh seed Belinda Bencic had to retire in the third set due to injury.
Over to the men's bracket, where second seed Andy Murray improved to 7-0 on grass this season by beating Lu Yen-Hsun 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 to reach the third round. Joining Murray in Round 3 are fifth seed Kei Nishikori, sixth seed Milos Raonic, No. 7 Richard Gasquet and No. 9 Marin Cilic.
Americans John Isner and Donald Young won their opening-round matches.
The top seeds are in action on Friday as Novak Djokovic faces American Sam Querrey and Serena Williams battles fellow countrywoman Christina McHale. Men's third seed Roger Federer and No. 4 Stan Wawrinka play separate matches as part of the Centre Court schedule.
