In baseball, in the American League, Baltimore edged Boston 3-2, Tampa Bay slid past Seattle 8-7, Detroit won against the White Sox 11-8, Kansas City beat Cleveland 3-2, Texas bested Oakland 10-6, and it was the Angels over Minnesota 5-4.
In the National League, Pittsburgh blanked the Mets 4-0, the Dodgers beat Arizona 7-4, the Cubs slid past Washington 4-3, Cincinnati defeated Atlanta 3-1, Miami bested San Diego 5-2, and San Francisco won against Milwaukee 3-2.
In interleague play, Colorado topped the Yankees 13-10, Houston beat St. Louis 5-2, and it was Toronto over Philadelphia 11-3.
NHL:
It looks like the city of Las Vegas is about to land its first major professional sports team. A person with direct knowledge of the NHL's decision says the league has settled on Las Vegas as its choice for expansion, at a cost of $500 million. A board of governors meeting next month is expected to OK the deal.
Thousands of people waited in line at Joe Louis Arena to pay their final respects to hockey great Gordie Howe. The Red Wings home arena hosted the public visitation for the former Detroit star, who died Friday at age 88. Among those who served as pallbearers were Wayne Gretzky, NHL coaching great Scotty Bowman and Tigers Hall of Famer Al Kaline.
NFL:
New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis says he plans to keep playing "until the wheels fall off." He had offseason surgery to repair a ligament in his right wrist but told reporters at minicamp yesterday it is healing well and he expects to be ready for training camp next month.
New York Giants receiver Victor Cruz is closer to playing after missing last season because of injury. Cruz was running routes and catching passes in individual drills yesterday, the opening day of the Giants' three-day minicamp.
Buffalo Bills cornerback Stephon Gilmore says he reported for the start of the team's three-day mandatory minicamp because he didn't want to get fined. In speaking to reporters Tuesday for the first time this offseason, Gilmore cited the lack of progress in negotiations to extend his contract beyond next season as the reason he skipped Buffalo's voluntary spring sessions.
WNBA:
In WNBA, the Liberty topped Dallas 91-88, Washington bested Connecticut in triple overtime 109-106, Minnesota beat Indiana 87-63, San Antonio won against Seattle 77-70, and it was the Sparks over Chicago 98-85.
NCAA:
Rutgers AD Patrick Hobbs has promoted Sarah Baumgartner from chief development officer to deputy director of athletics at the university. She will have oversight of Rutgers' marketing, ticketing and communications departments, and will also play a role in administrative and development efforts.
PGA:
Play opens tomorrow in the U.S. Open at Oakmont and top-ranked golfer Jason Day admits he's feeling stressed. Much of the focus in recent days has been on Day's health as he deals with a cold that he likely caught from his father-in-law two weeks ago.
Fantasy Sports:
The fantasy sports firms DraftKings and FanDuel are downplaying reports they might team up, although industry watchers suggest the timing is right for a deal. Both sites have been fighting for survival as states seek to impose greater regulation or to ban their online contests. The companies dismiss reports they've spoken about a merger as speculation.
Tennis:
Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova has appealed her two-year doping ban to the highest court in sports, seeking a ruling ahead of the Olympics. The Court of Arbitration for Sport says Sharapova is seeking to overturn or reduce the suspension imposed by the International Tennis Federation last week after she tested positive for meldonium at the Australian Open in January.
