NBA:
In the NBA playoffs, Miami topped Charlotte 106-73 in seven games to move onto the conference semifinals, Golden State bested Portland 118-106 to lead the series 1-0, and it was Toronto over Indiana 89-84 in seven games to move onto the conference semifinals to take on Miami.
NHL:
In the NHL playoffs, St. Louis beat Dallas in overtime 4-3 to tie the series at 1 game apiece and it was San Jose over Nashville 3-2 to lead the series 2-0.
Among 14 non-playoff teams, the Toronto Maple Leafs have been allotted the first pick overall in the National Hockey League draft next month in Buffalo, New York. Meanwhile the Buffalo Sabres have been allotted the 8th pick, the New Jersey Devils the 11th pick, and the Boston Bruins the 14th pick. The draft spots, scheduled for June 24th and 25th, were allotted by lottery on Saturday.
Washington Capitals defenseman Brooks Orpik has been suspended three games for his late hit to the head of Pittsburgh defenseman Olli Maatta in Game 2 of the second-round series Saturday. Orpik hit Maatta in the head after the puck left the area four minutes into Game 2 Saturday. Orpik was given a two-minute minor penalty for interference. Maatta left the game and did not return.
MLB:
In baseball, in the American League, Boston edged the Yankees 8-7 for a three game sweep, Toronto beat Tampa Bay 5-1, the White Sox defeated Baltimore 7-1, Detroit slid past Minnesota 6-5, the Angels bested Texas 9-6, Houston edged Oakland 2-1, and it was Kansas City over Seattle 4-1.
In the National League San Francisco topped the Mets 6-1, Cincinnati edged Pittsburgh 6-5 in 11 innings, Milwaukee blasted Miami 14-5, Washington defeated St. Louis 6-1, Atlanta slid past the Cubs in 10 innings 4-3, Colorado doubled up Arizona 6-3, and it was the Dodgers over San Diego 1-0.
In interleague play, Philadelphia beat Cleveland 2-1.
NFL:
Former New England Patriots defensive lineman Ron Brace is being laid to rest in his home town. A celebration of his life will be held at St. John's Congregational Church in Springfield, Massachusetts, on Monday morning followed by a noontime funeral service. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery. Brace died at his family's home on April 24th. He was 29.
The New England Patriots have signed running back/wide receiver D.J. Foster from Arizona State as part of their class of undrafted rookie free agents. Foster announced that he was joining the Patriots on his Twitter feed after the NFL draft concluded Saturday afternoon.
PGA:
Tournament officials have trimmed the PGA's Zurich Classic to 54 holes following another day of wet weather. Jhonattan Vegas birdied two of five holes he was able to play on Sunday to pull into a tie for the lead with Brian Stuard at 13 under. Both players will resume Monday on the sixth hole. Bobby Wyatt was third at minus-12 following an eagle and four birdies on the front nine in his third round. Jamie Lovemark was fourth at 11 under with 13 holes left.
LPGA:
Jenny Shin earned her first LPGA victory by shooting a final round 4-under-67 to capture the Texas Shootout. She finished the tournament at 14-under, two in front of fellow South Korean's Amy Yang and Mi Jung Hur as well as American Gerina Piller.
NCAA:
Forward V.J. Beachem has withdrawn his name from the NBA draft and will return to Notre Dame for his senior season. The 6-foot-8, 200-pound forward finished third on the team in scoring, averaging 12.0 points and 3.9 rebounds as the Irish finished 24-12.
F1:
Nico Rosberg has stretched his season-opening winning streak to four races on the Formula One circuit. Rosberg finished first in the Russian Grand Prix at Socchi, his seventh win in a row dating to last season. Mercedes teammate and reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton was second, with Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen third.
NASCAR:
Brad Keselowski took the checkered flag in the crash-marred, Sprint Cup race at Talladega Superspeedway. Chris Buescher's car flipped three times in an early crash, and Matt Kenseth was turned upside down in the closing laps. Only 21 of the 40 cars finished on the lead lap, and 12 cars were ruled out of the race. Kyle Busch finished second, followed by Austin Dillon, Jamie McMurray and pole-sitter Chase Elliott. Busch is within nine points of Kevin Harvick in the points race.
