NBA:
In the NBA, New York topped the Lakers 90-87, Milwaukee bested Brooklyn 109-100, Utah defeated Sacramento 108-99, Atlanta won against Indiana 104-75, and it was Cleveland over the Clippers 114-90.
NHL:
In the NHL, Pittsburgh beat the Rangers 5-3, Tampa Bay blanked Columbus 4-0, and it was Toronto over Detroit 1-0.
The first black player in the National Hockey League, who broke the league's color barrier when he suited up for the Bruins in 1958, is returning to Boston. Willie O'Ree will return to the city on Wednesday to lead a discussion at the Anti-Defamation League's Breaking Barriers series. On Friday, he will speak to more than 1,200 students and teachers from across the state at the 22nd annual ADL Youth Congress.
NCAA:
The NCAA men's tournament field is out and the No. 1 seeds are: North Carolina in the East, Kansas in the South, Virginia in the Midwest and Oregon in the West. Xavier is No. 2 in the East, Big Ten champion Michigan State is seeded second in the Midwest, Villanova is second seed in the South and Oklahoma is the No. 2 seed in the West.
Holy Cross takes on Southern University at 6:40 on Wednesday in a First Four game with the winner getting a spot in the First Round to see Oregon. No. 13 Iona faces off against No. 4 Iowa State on Thursday at 2 p.m in Denver. No. 9 UConn goes head to head with No. 8 Colorado on Thursday at 1:30 in Iowa. No. 10 Syracuse sees No. 7 Dayton on Friday at 12:15 in St. Louis.
Meanwhile the University at Buffalo made it in. They’ll take on No. 3 Miami as the fourtheenth seed on Thursday at 6:50 p.m in Providence, Rhode Island. No. 13 Stony Brook will see No.4 Kentucky on Thursday at 9:40 p.m in Raleigh.
In college men's basketball, Connecticut beat Memphis 72-58 yesterday in the American Athletic Conference championship game. Shonn Miller and Sterling Gibbs scored 13 points each, and Daniel Hamilton had a double-double for the third straight day.
In the CBI tournament, on Tuesday Siena goes head to head with Morehead State at 7 p.m. and on Wednesday, UAlbany sees Ohio at 7 p.m. and it's the battle of the catamounts when Western Carolina sees the Vermont at 7 p.m.
In men’s college hockey, the field for the last four in the ECAC hockey tournament has been set. No. 1 Quinnipiac sees No. 7 Dartmouth and it’s No. 3 Harvard vs. No. 4 St. Lawrence.
In college women's basketball, Robert Morris held off Sacred Heart 56-51 yesterday to win the Northeast Conference Tournament championship. Ashley Ravelli scored 14 points for the Colonials, who are headed to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three seasons.
The first blockbuster upset of March Madness was Twitter over CBS on Selection Sunday. The NCAA says it is looking into how a copy of this year's tournament bracket got leaked online during the network's extended selection show on Sunday. The bracket was being shared on Twitter about 20 minutes after the start of the two-hour broadcast. The NCAA says it takes "this matter seriously and we are looking into it." CBS declined comment.
MLS:
Toronto FC tied New York City FC 2-2 yesterday in the first game of the season at Yankee Stadium. Sebastian Giovinco scored in the 76th minute for Toronto FC to tie the game. Giovinco has two goals and two assists in two games this season. David Villa scored on a penalty kick in the 24th minute for New York FC and added another four minutes later for a 2-0 lead, but Toronto bounced back.
MLB:
The Philadelphia Phillies beat the New York Yankees 3-0 yesterday. CC Sabathia didn't make it out of the second inning in his second spring training start. The 35-year-old lefty gave up three runs and five hits in 1 2-3 innings. He struck out one, walked one, hit a batter, threw a wild pitch and committed a fielding error.
The New York Mets pounded Miami pitching in an 11-0 victory that spoiled Giancarlo Stanton's return to the Marlins' lineup yesterday. Matt Harvey cruised through four scoreless innings. Making his second start of the spring, Harvey felt encouraged that he handled the NL East-rival Marlins, a team that's traditionally given him trouble.
A Tampa Bay Rays split squad beat the Boston Red Sox 13-5 yesterday. Red Sox right-hander Rick Porcello was charged with eight runs and 10 hits in three innings. Porcello struck out two and walked none. Hank Conger hit a two-run homer for Tampa Bay and finished with three RBIs.
PGA:
Charl Schwartzel won the PGA's Valspar Championship on the first playoff hole with a pair for his second career victory on the PGA Tour. That was good enough when Bill Hass bogeyed the hole.
NFL:
The Buffalo Bills have fired defensive line coach Karl Dunbar in an abrupt move announced by Rex Ryan. In a statement released by the team, Ryan called it a difficult decision but added he felt he needed to make a change "and go in a different direction." No other details were provided. The Bills offensive line struggled last season in adapting to the defensive system introduced by Ryan. Defensive end Mario Williams went public with his complaints about the system and was cut by the Bills earlier this month.
IndyCar:
Colombian sensation Juan Pablo Montoya won the IndyCar season-opening race for the second consecutive year as he took the checkered flag in the race on the streets of St. Petersburg. The win Sunday by Montoya was the eighth in 12 tries for Penske drivers. Simon Pagenaud finished second to make it a 1-2 Penske finish, but Ryan Hunter-Reay spoiled the sweep by passing Helio Castroneves with three laps remaining.
The day got off to a rocky start for the Penske organization as pole-sitter Will Power was diagnosed with a concussion that sidelined him from the opener. The four Penske drivers had swept qualifying and Power broke his own track record three times in Saturday qualifying.
