NHL:

In the NHL, Boston edged Calgary 2-1, Carolina topped New Jersey 3-1, Edmonton skated by Buffalo in overtime 2-1, the Islanders beat Vancouver 3-2, Florida bested Winnipeg 3-2, Nashville won against Dallas 5-3, Minnesota doubled up Colorado 6-3, St. Louis defeated Ottawa in a shootout 4-3, and it was Washington over Pittsburgh 3-2.

The NHL has suspended Boston Bruins forward Zac Rinaldo for five games without pay for an illegal hit to the head in Sunday's game against Tampa Bay. Rinaldo took out Lightning forward Cedric Paquette against the boards in the first period of Tampa Bay's 4-1 victory. Rinaldo was assessed a minor penalty for illegal check to the head.

NCAA:

UConn's new athletic director Dave Benedict says he considers the Huskies' program at the level of a Power Five school. Benedict had been the chief operating office at Auburn. He was introduced yesterday as the 12th athletic director at Connecticut. He replaces Warde Manuel, who will become athletic director at Michigan this month.

Third-ranked Villanova has wrapped up its third straight Big East regular-season championship with a rout of one of the league's bottom-feeders. Kris Jenkins scored 14 straight points and finished with a career-high 31 as the Wildcats thumped DePaul 83-62. Jenkins scored 20 points by halftime and opened the second with consecutive 3s, topping his previous best of 23 points. Josh Hart contributed 18 points as the Wildcats improved to 26-4 overall, 15-2 in the conference.

In other top-25 finals:

— Malcolm Brogdon scored 18 points and Anthony Gill had 11 and 10 rebounds in fourth-ranked Virginia's 64-57 victory at Clemson 64-57. The Cavaliers blew an early 12-0 lead and withstood Jaron Blossomgame's 31 points before improving to 23-6.

— Buddy Hield scored 23 points in his final collegiate home game as sixth-ranked Oklahoma held off No. 19 Baylor 73-71. Ryan Spangler had 15 points and 13 rebounds for the Sooners, who blew a 26-point lead before nailing down their 23rd win.

— Chinanu Onuaku made two free throws with 30.9 seconds remaining and Damion Lee added two more with 10.7 left to help No. 11 Louisville outlast Georgia Tech 56-53. Onuaku had 17 points and 11 rebounds while Lee added 14 points to the Cardinals' 23rd win.

— Yogi Ferrell had 20 points and Troy Williams added 15 to lead No. 12 Indiana to an 81-78 triumph at No. 16 Iowa. Ferrell drained a crucial 3-pointer with 37 seconds to secure the Hoosiers' 24th victory and their second outright Big Ten regular-season title in four years.

— Vince Edwards scored 20 points and 15th-ranked Purdue ended a three-game road losing streak by whipping Nebraska 81-62. A.J. Hammons had 12 of his 16 points in the second half for the Boilermakers.

— Grayson Allen scored 30 points and both Marshall Plumlee and freshman Brandon Ingram each had double-doubles as No. 17 Duke topped Wake Forest 79-71. Plumlee added 13 points and matched a career high with 17 rebounds, while Ingram finished with 15 points and 11 boards to support the Blue Devils' 22nd victory.

— Danuel House scored 19 points and No. 20 Texas A&M went on a 20-0 run to beat Auburn 81-63. Jalen Jones had 16 points and eight rebounds for the Aggies, who controlled the game after falling behind by 11 in the first half.

— Jamal Murray scored 21 points and Tyler Ulis added 19 as No. 22 Kentucky handed Florida its fourth straight loss, 88-79. Skal Labissiere chipped in 11 points and eight rebounds in his first start for the Wildcats since Dec. 12.

NFL:

Several prominent NFL players have been designated with franchise tags before Tuesday's deadline.

Those receiving the non-exclusive franchise tag include Carolina All-Pro cornerback Josh Norman, Jets Pro Bowl defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson and Rams cornerback Trumaine Johnson. The non-exclusive tag means players can still negotiate a contract with another team, but their existing team would have the right to match the offer or receive a pair of first-round draft picks as compensation.

Washington quarterback Kirk Cousins was given the franchise tag, as were Broncos linebacker Von Miller, Chiefs All-Pro safety Eric Berry and Buffalo left tackle Cordy Glenn. The move currently locks them into a one-year deal that will pay him among the top five salaries at his position. Teams have until July 15 to negotiate long-term deals with franchised players.

Miami has placed the transition tag on defensive end Olivier Vernon. The Dolphins decided against placing a $15.7 million franchise tag on Vernon, which would have prevented another team from offering him a deal.

Elsewhere in the NFL:

— The agent for Mason Crosby says the Green Bay Packers kicker has agreed to a four-year deal. Crosby hit 85 perfect of his field-goal attempts and didn't miss inside of 40 yards.

— The Buffalo Bills have released high-priced defensive end Mario Williams, freeing the salary cap-strapped team of nearly $13 million in payroll next season. Williams had two years remaining on his contract.

— Sam Bradford has agreed to a two-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles. Bradford started 14 games last year and threw for a career-high 3,725 yards, the fourth-highest yardage total in franchise history.

MLB:

New York Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman has agreed to accept a 30-game suspension under Major League Baseball's domestic violence policy, a penalty stemming from an incident with his girlfriend last October. Under the discipline, Chapman will serve the penalty from the start of the season.

Elsewhere in the majors:

— The World Series-champion Kansas City Royals and catcher Salvador Perez have worked out a deal that calls for the All-Star to receive a guaranteed $52.5 million over five seasons through 2021. He became the everyday catcher in 2012 and has been voted to the All-Star game each of the past three years.

— Dodgers reliever Josh Ravin fractured his left forearm in an auto accident. Manager Dave Roberts says he is not sure how long Ravin will be sidelined following Monday's accident. The 28-year-old right-hander was 2-1 with a 6.75 ERA in nine games and 9 1/3 innings last year.

— The Seattle Mariners have finalized a major league contract with Cuban outfielder Guillermo Heredia, who defected last year and hasn't played competitive baseball since 2014. The Mariners said Heredia hit .285 with 23 homers and 121 RBIs over 374 games during six seasons with Matanzas.

— Tampa Bay's exhibition game against Cuba's national team in Havana on March 22 has been finalized. It will be Major League Baseball's first trip to the communist island nation since the Baltimore Orioles played there in 1999. President Barack Obama plans to attend the game.

FIFA:

The Court of Arbitration for Sport says Michel Platini has appealed against his six-year ban by FIFA. CAS says Platini is seeking to annul the sanction confirmed by the FIFA appeal committee last week. The court did not say if FIFA's ethics committee, which originally banned Platini for eight years, has also appealed to increase the ban. No hearing date has been set. Platini was banned for conflict of interest in accepting a $2 million payment from FIFA in 2011, a transaction which was approved by then-president Sepp Blatter. Blatter has also pledged to appeal his six-year ban at CAS. Both men deny wrongdoing.

Skiing:

Lindsey Vonn says she is ending her World Cup skiing season early because of injury.
