Top-seed Serena Williams will face Garbine Muguruza in the Wimbledon women's final on Saturday. Williams whipped Maria Sharapova, 6-2, 6-4 to get within one match victory of her fourth consecutive major title. Muguruza advanced to her first Grand Slam final by surprising No. 13 Agnieszka Radwanska, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
MLB:
In baseball, in the American League, the Yankees tripled up Oakland 6-2, Kansas City bested Tampa Bay 8-3, the White Sox blanked Toronto 2-0, Cleveland won against Houston 3-1, Detroit doubled up Minnesota 4-2, and it was Seattle over the Angels 7-2.
Boston had a day off to prep as they host the Yankees tonight.
Former Razorback outfielder and Boston Red Sox slugger Andrew Benintendi has been named the top Southeastern Conference male athlete by the league's athletic directors. Commissioner Greg Sankey announced the 2014-2015 Roy F. Kramer SEC Male Athlete of the Year honor yesterday. Benintendi was the seventh overall pick in the latest MLB draft after finishing the season with a .376 batting average and 57 RBIs.
In the National League, St. Louis bested Pittsburgh 4-1, Miami shut out Cincinnati 2-0, Colorado beat Atlanta 5-3, and it was the Dodgers over Philadelphia 6-0.
The Mets had a day off.
Mets pitcher Steven Matz has a partially torn muscle in his back that will sideline the impressive rookie at least a month — probably longer. In a surprise announcement, the Mets revealed yesterday that Matz was examined and diagnosed with a partial tear of the lat muscle on his left side.
NFL:
Former Oakland quarterback Ken Stabler has died at 69 following complications from colon cancer. Stabler was a four-time Pro Bowl selection with the Raiders and was named the NFL's MVP in 1974. He was under center during Oakland's 32-14 victory over the Minnesota Vikings in the 1977 Super Bowl.
NBA:
The New York Knicks have signed guard Arron Afflalo, center Robin Lopez and forwards Derrick Williams and Kyle O'Quinn. O'Quinn was acquired from Orlando by a sign-and-trade. The Knicks gave the Magic the right to exchange 2019 second-round draft picks and cash considerations.
Brook Lopez and Thaddeus Young have both committed to re-sign with the Brooklyn Nets. They say they wanted to stay together after they played well down the stretch in leading the Nets into the playoffs last season.
LeBron James is staying in Cleveland after accepting a new contract with the Cavaliers. Two people familiar with the negotiations tell The Associated Press the two-year package is worth $47 million, a deal that includes a $24 million player option for 2016-17. This is the first time since 2006 that James will re-sign with a team.
NHL:
New Jersey Devils scouting director David Conte has left the team by mutual agreement. Ray Shero, who took over as Devils general manager in May when Lou Lamoriello relinquished those duties, announced Conte's departure in a statement yesterday. Conte has been with the organization for 31 years.
Golf:
Two players shared the lead when the first round of the U.S. Women's Open was suspended due to the threat of dangerous weather. Karrie Webb and Marina Alex each opened with 4-under 66s, putting them one stroke ahead of Amy Yang, Na Yeon Choi and Jane Park. Yang completed her first round, Park was through 13 and Choi had three holes remaining.
Jordan Spieth struggled at times in the opening round of the John Deere Classic as he tunes up for next week's British Open at St. Andrews. Spieth managed an even-par 71 despite three bogeys in a four-hole stretch. He also missed a birdie putt on 18, leaving him seven shots back.
Spieth will seek his third straight major title when he visits Scotland next week. Justin Thomas and Nicholas Thompson were tied for the lead at 8 under, one shot better than Charles Howell III and Luke Guthrie.
World Cup:
Mayor Bill de Blasio says the parade New York City is throwing for the World Cup-winning U.S. Women's Soccer Team will be "magical." The team will be honored with a parade up the stretch of Broadway known as the "Canyon of Heroes" today. The team captured the World Cup by defeating Japan last Sunday. All 23 members are expected to attend the parade.
Tour de France:
Tour de France leader Tony Martin had to pull out of the race after breaking his collarbone in a crash that he caused late in the sixth stage. Czech rider Zdenek Stybar won the race in a sprint finish, while defending champion Vincenzo Nibali of Italy was caught in a crash near to the finish. In the ensuing confusion of the crash Stybar rode ahead unchallenged to clinch the victory. Both Nabali and Martin were able to finish the race but news of Martin's withdrawal came hours later.
WNBA:
In the WNBA, New York beat Washington 79-76.
