In baseball in an all interleague day, the Yankees beat Miami 2-1, Atlanta topped Boston 5-2, Toronto blanked the Mets 8-0, Baltimore won against Philadelphia 6-4, Tampa Bay shut out Washington 5-0, Pittsburgh bested the White Sox 3-1, the Cubs crushed Cleveland 17-0, Cincinnati doubled up Detroit 8-4 in 13 innings, Kansas City trumped Milwaukee 10-2, Minnesota beat St. Louis 3-1, Houston doubled up Colorado 8-4, Arizona edged the Angels 3-2, Oakland topped San Diego 16-2, Seattle won against San Francisco 2-0, and it was Texas over the Dodgers 5-3.
Boston Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington says he deserves most of the blame with his club struggling for the second straight year. The Red Sox are once again in last place in the American League East. Cherington didn't take questions yesterday regarding manager John Farrell's job security or poor player performance, focusing instead on his own job and the state of the franchise.
Alex Rodriguez is just three hits shy of 3,000 after going 2-for-2 with an RBI single and two walks in the New York Yankees' 2-1 win over Miami. Rodriguez lined an RBI single to center in the first inning and singled in the fifth to support Michael Pineda, who had a no-hitter until Chris Yelich homered in the seventh. Rodriguez is hitting .274 with 33 RBIs after missing all of last season because of a drug suspension.
Nelson Doubleday Jr., the publishing scion who bought the New York Mets and shepherded the team to a 1986 World Series title, has died. He was 81. His son-in-law, John Havens, said Doubleday died of pneumonia at his home in Locust Valley, New York, on Wednesday.

Los Angeles Clippers Owner Steve Ballmer unveiled a new logo for the team last night.
NHL:
The New Jersey Devils have named Geoff Ward and Alain Nasreddine as assistant coaches for John Hynes. There's no word on whether Adam Oates, Scott Stevens and Chris Terreri will be retained from last year's staff. Ward spent last season with Adler Mannheim of the German Ice Hockey League, where he was named the coach of the year and led the Eagles to the championship.
NFL:
The New York Jets have placed tight end Zach Sudfeld on season-ending injured reserve after he cleared waivers. The move comes after Sudfeld was waived/injured earlier in the week because of a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee suffered during minicamp practice last week. He was claimed off waivers from New England in 2013.
Salem State University says no public funds were used to pay Tom Brady's $170,000 fee for a speech at the school last month. It was the quarterback's first public appearance after the NFL concluded that he probably knew New England Patriots employees had a role in deflating footballs.
The New York Giants have become the latest NFL team to use a drone to videotape a portion of practice. The Giants entered the high-tech surveillance field yesterday when they used a DJI Phantom 3 drone to videotape a portion of the second day of a mandatory veterans minicamp.
NCAA:
Florida is still alive in the College World Series after Harrison Bader led off the game with the first of the Gators' four home runs in a 10-2 rout that eliminated Miami. Alex Faedo and two relievers combined on a four-hitter for the Gators, who outscored Miami 25-5 in their two CWS meetings. The Gators next play Virginia, which is 2-0.
Olympics:
Organizers for Boston's bid for the 2024 Summer Olympics are now proposing holding competitions for one of the games' most popular events at a waterfront park in Quincy, Massachusetts. Boston 2024 CEO Richard Davey joined Quincy Mayor Tom Koch yesterday at Squantum Point Park to announce the possible venue. The waterfront park offers views of the Boston skyline.
