NHL:
In the NHL playoffs, Tampa Bay blanked Detroit 2-0 to bring the Lightning to the second round, series ended 4-3.
The next round of the NHL playoffs is set as Henrik Lundqvist and the Rangers take on the Washington Capitals in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals tonight. The Ducks will host Calgary in their series opener, and the Minnesota Wild will begin their conference semifinal against the Blackhawks tomorrow night in Chicago.
NBA:
In the NBA playoffs, Atlanta beat Brooklyn 107-97 to grab a 3-2 series lead and it was Memphis over Portland 99-93 to move on to the second round finishing the series 4-1.
A person with knowledge of the situation tells The Associated Press that Minnesota Timberwolves forward Andrew Wiggins will be named NBA rookie of the year Thursday.
Wiggins averaged 16.9 points and 4.6 rebounds while playing all 82 games for the Timberwolves this season. He was drafted first overall by Cleveland last summer before being packaged in a deal that sent Kevin Love to the Cavaliers.
MLB:
In baseball, in the American League, Tampa Bay edged the Yankees 3-2 in 13 innings, Boston topped Toronto 4-1, Detroit bested Minnesota 10-7, Baltimore beat the White Sox 8-2 in a stadium missing fans after being closed to the public due to safety concerns and rioting, Cleveland defeated Kansas City 7-5, Seattle beat Texas 5-2, and it was the Angels over Oakland 6-3.
In the National League, Miami topped the Mets 7-3, St. Louis beat Philadelphia 5-2, Pittsburgh topped the Cubs 8-1, Milwaukee won against Cincinnati 8-3, Arizona crushed Colorado 9-1, and it was the Dodgers over San Francisco 7-3.
NFL:
The NFL draft starts tonight at 8 p.m. on ESPN. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have the first overall pick, the Jets have the 6th pick, Giants have 9th, and the Patriots have the 32nd pick. The Bills don’t have a pick until the second round.
PGA:
Calvin Peete, the most successful black player on the PGA Tour before the arrival of Tiger Woods, has died at the age of 71. Peete won 12 times on the PGA Tour and was the most accurate driver of his generation. He led the tour in driving accuracy every year from 1981 to 1990. Peete's biggest year was in 1982 when he won four times. He won the Vardon Trophy for the lowest scoring average in 1984 by edging Jack Nicklaus.
Masters champion Jordan Spieth was a winner on the first day of the Match Play Championship. Spieth carded six birdies and closed out Mikko Ilonen of Finland on the 16th hole at TPC Harding Park. Players are competing in a new round-robin format that replaced single elimination. Defending champion Jason Day fell to Charley Hoffman. Justin Rose lost to Marc Leishman. Henrik Stenson and Jimmy Walker lost in extra holes. They now need help to advance from their group.
Horse Racing:
American Pharoah was made the early 5-2 favorite and drew the No. 18 post for the 141st Kentucky Derby Saturday at Churchill Downs. American Pharoah comes into the Derby having won the Arkansas Derby by eight lengths. Undefeated Dortmund drew the No. 8 post and is 3-1 for the 1 1/4-mile race.
That gives trainer Bob Baffert the top two choices on the morning line.
