Sports Report: NY Islanders Fall To Capitals In Playoffs, Nets Even Series Against Hawks

NHL:

In the NHL playoffs, Washington skated by the Islanders 2-1 sending the Capitals to face the Rangers in the second round and it was Tampa Bay over Detroit 5-2 evening the series at 3 games apiece.

Meanwhile New York Rangers forward Mats Zuccarello is out indefinitely with what the team calls an upper body injury. Zuccarello is a versatile wing who sees time on power plays and as a penalty killer. He was hit in the head with a shot by teammate Ryan McDonagh in the first period of the clinching first-round victory over Pittsburgh on Friday night.

Hockey Hall of Famer Marcel Pronovost has died at age 84. He spent 15 years with the Detroit Red Wings before capping his playing career with a five-year run in Toronto, Pronovost won the Stanley Cup five times as a player and recorded 88 goals and 257 assists in 1,206 regular-season games.

NBA:

In the NBA playoffs, Brooklyn bested Atlanta in overtime 120-115 evening the series at 2 games apiece, Milwaukee topped Chicago 94-88 Bulls lead the series 3-2, and it was Portland over Memphis 99-92 Grizzlies lead 3-1.

The NBA has suspended Cavaliers guard J.R. Smith two games without pay and Celtics center Kelly Olynyk one game for their roles in separate incidents during a playoff game. Smith will miss Games 1 and 2 of the Cavs' next series, when the club will also be without Kevin Love, who dislocated his shoulder earlier in the game. Olynyk will set out the first game of next regular season.

MLB:

In baseball, in the American League, the Yankees bested Tampa Bay 4-1, Boston edged Toronto 6-5, Kansas City tripled up Cleveland 6-2, Seattle won against Texas 3-1, and it was Detroit over Minnesota 5-4. The White Sox at Baltimore game was postponed due to public safety surrounding the ongoing riots.

In the National League, the Mets topped Miami 3-1, Philadelphia beat St. Louis 4-1, the Cubs blanked Pittsburgh 4-0, Colorado edged Arizona 5-4, Cincinnati bested Milwaukee 9-6, Atlanta doubled up Washington 8-4, and it was the Dodgers over San Francisco 8-3.

In interleague play Houston beat San Diego 9-4.

The St. Louis Cardinals say ace Adam Wainwright is out for the season because of a torn left Achilles. Wainwright will have surgery later this week. Wainwright was hurt while batting Saturday in Milwaukee.

NFL:

The New York Giants have waived running back Michael Cox. Cox played two seasons with the Giants, missing the final two months of last season after breaking a leg against Seattle in November. A seventh-round draft choice, Cox saw limited action in 18 games, rushing for 76 yards and catching five passes.

Horse Racing:

Luis "Lou" Pena, a well-known harness trainer has been hit with a $343,000 fine and a three-year ban following  charges he illegally drugged his horses hundreds of times between 2010 and 2012. The Times Union reports that Pena had most of his horses stabled in New Jersey but raced in Saratoga, Yonkers and Tioga.
