Sports Report: NCAA Tournament Set; UAlbany Nabs 14th Seed

NCAA:

Unbeaten and top-ranked Kentucky has drawn the first overall seed in the NCAA men's basketball tournament and will head the Midwest Region. Villanova has the No. 1 seed in the East, Duke heads the South and Wisconsin tops the West.

UAlbany made its way into the dance for the third straight time after beating Stony Brook 51-50 on Saturday and it managed to grab the 14th seed in the East. Albany will face No. 3 Oklahoma on Friday in Columbus, Ohio. In the Midwest, Manhattan nabbed the first round game against Hampton for the 16th seed. University at Buffalo got the 12th seed and will go up against No. 5 West Virginia Friday in Columbus, Ohio. In the West, No. 9 St. John’s faces No. 8 San Diego State in Charlotte, North Carolina on Friday.

In women’s college basketball, UAlbany bested Hartford 84-75 to make it into dance.

The women’s selection show is tonight at 7 p.m.

NBA:

In the NBA, Phoenix beat New York 102-89, Portland bested Toronto 113-97, San Antonio topped Minnesota 123-97, Atlanta won against the Lakers 91-86, Denver trumped New Orleans in double overtime 118-111, Cleveland defeated Orlando 123-108, Houston squeaked by the Clippers 100-98, and it was Oklahoma City over Chicago 109-100.

NHL:

Over on the ice, the Rangers topped Florida 2-1, Washington blanked Boston 2-0, Ottawa skated by Philadelphia in a shootout 2-1, St. Louis shut out Dallas 3-0, Detroit topped Pittsburgh 5-1, Anaheim doubled up Nashville 4-2, and it was Carolina over Columbus 3-2.

NASCAR:

Kevin Harvick has become the first NASCAR driver since Richard Petty in 1974 to finish first or second in his first four races of the season. Harvick followed last Sunday's victory at Las Vegas with a dominating performance at Phoenix, leading for more than 200 laps and finishing well ahead of Jamie McMurray. Harvick has won the last four races at Phoenix.

PGA:

Jordan Spieth sank a 30-foot birdie putt on the third extra hole to capture the PGA's Valspar Championship in Florida. Spieth holed a 12-foot par putt on the 18th hole to join a three-man playoff with Patrick Reed and Sean O'Hair. Spieth saved par on his final three holes for a 69 that left him 10-under for the tournament.

MLB:

In baseball spring training, the Yankees edged Philadelphia 3-2, Philadelphia topped Boston 11-4, Pittsburgh doubled up Baltimore 4-2, Tampa Bay beat the Mets 8-4, Miami doubled up Detroit 4-2, St. Louis tied Minnesota 6-6, Toronto double up Atlanta 10-5, Houston slid past Washington 3-2, the Cubs edged Cincinnati 3-2, the White Sox beat the Angels 5-3, the Dodgers won against Seattle 5-2, Texas bested Milwaukee 12-5, Oakland topped Milwaukee 5-2, Cleveland doubled up San Diego 4-2, Colorado tripled up Kansas City 6-2, and it was San Francisco over Arizona 5-0.

Skiing:

American Hannah Kearney closed out her World Cup career with her 46th career victory to win the overall freestyle and moguls titles for 2014-15. The 29-year-old Kearney will retire after the U.S. championships later this month.

Formula One:

The opening race of the 2015 Formula One Grand Prix season finished just like last season did, with a win by world champion Lewis Hamilton. He led Nico Rosberg to a one-two finish for Mercedes with Ferrari newcomer and former world champion Sebastian Vettel third.
