In the NBA, Memphis topped Brooklyn 95-86, Houston beat Phoenix 127-118, Chicago bested Sacramento 104-86, Detroit trumped Charlotte 106-78, and it was Denver over the Lakers 106-96.

NHL:

Over on the ice, the Rangers edged Toronto 5-4, the Islanders beat Edmonton 3-2, Dallas won against Boston 5-3, Montreal edged Philadelphia in overtime 2-1, St. Louis defeated Arizona 2-1, Florida tripled up Anaheim 6-2, Ottawa skated by Buffalo 2-1, Winnipeg bested Minnesota in overtime 2-1, and it was Nashville over Tampa Bay in overtime 3-2.

NCAA:

Top-ranked and undefeated Kentucky won its 24th straight by rallying late against LSU 71-69 on the road in Southeastern Conference play. Willie Cauley-Stein had 15 points for the Wildcats, who ended the game on an 11-3 run to remain the lone undefeated Division I men's team.

NFL:

Seattle cornerback Richard Sherman says he will not have surgery on his injured left elbow and will let the ligament damage heal on its own. Sherman suffered the injury in the NFC championship game, but competed in the Super Bowl without a brace on the elbow.

It was initially feared that Sherman would need Tommy John surgery to repair the damage.

Sherman had three tackles in the Super Bowl.

MLB:

Alex Rodriguez has met with Yankees officials and apologized to the team following his season-long suspension for violating baseball's drug agreement and labor contract.

Rodriguez is preparing to report to spring training.

The team says in a statement that the 39-year-old met at Yankee Stadium with owner Hal Steinbrenner, team president Randy Levine, general manager Brian Cashman and assistant general manager Jean Afterman.

A joint statement issued by the team said "Alex initiated the meeting and apologized to the organization for his actions over the past several years."

The city of Hartford has reached an agreement with the owner of the New Britain Rock Cats and a developer on a plan to build a new $56 million minor league baseball stadium in the city. The plan calls for improvements to the Downtown North neighborhood that include a supermarket, a brewery, housing, stores and restaurants.

Golf:

Swedish golf great Annika Sorenstam and Britain's Princess Anne are among the first seven women admitted to the Royal and Ancient Golf Club in St. Andrews, Scotland. The club voted in September to end 260 years of male-only exclusivity by voting in favor of inviting women to join.

Sorenstam is a 10-time major champion. Princess Anne competed in equestrian for Britain at the 1976 Olympics and is an IOC member.
