MLB:
The Kansas City Royals put together a seven-run second inning and forced a seventh game in the World Series by crushing the San Francisco Giants 10-0. Lorenzo Cain had three RBIs, including a two-run single during the big rally. Yordano Ventura held the Giants to three hits in seven innings for the victory.
Game 7 for the World Series is in Kansas City tonight at 8. Tim Hudson takes the mound for the Giants versus Jeremy Guthrie for the Royals.
Thousands of people in the Dominican Republic attended the burial of former St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Oscar Taveras.
Among those at the funeral Tuesday was Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak and manager Mike Matheny.
The 22-year-old slugger was considered one of baseball's top prospects. Taveras hit .239 with three homers and 22 RBIs in 80 games in his only season in the majors.
Taveras died Sunday after authorities say he lost control of his 2014 Chevrolet Camaro. His girlfriend also was killed in the crash.
NHL:
Over on the ice in the NHL, the Winnipeg Jets rallied to beat the New York Islanders 4-3 in a back-and-forth game last night. The Minnesota Wild rallied for three goals in the third period to beat the Boston Bruins 4-3. One night after allowing five goals in the third period and blowing a 3-0 lead in New York against the Rangers, the Wild were at the opposite end of a surprising comeback in Boston.
Elsewhere Philadelphia beat Los Angeles in overtime 3-2, Ottawa bested Columbus 5-2, Pittsburgh topped New Jersey 8-3, Tampa Bay defeated Arizona 7-3, Toronto blanked Buffalo 4-0, Anaheim skated past Chicago 1-0, St. Louis edged Dallas in overimte 4-3, Montreal beat Calgary in a shootout 2-1, San Jose bested Colorado 3-2 in a shootout, and it was Vancouver over Carolina 4-1.
NBA:
The San Antonio Spurs have opened their NBA title defense with a 101-100 victory over Dallas. Tony Parker shot 4-for-4 from 3-point range and finished with a team-high 23 points, including the go-ahead trey with 1:07 remaining. Tim Duncan chipped in 14 points and 13 rebounds, while Manu Ginobili added 20 points to the victory. Elsewhere New Orleans bested Orlando 101-84, and it was Houston over the Lakers 108-90.
The Chicago Bulls are in New York tonight to face the Knicks at 8. The Brooklyn Nets take the Celtics to the court in Boston at 7:30.
NCAA:
SEC schools have claimed three of the top four spots in the College Football Playoff selection committee's first top-25 ranking. Mississippi State and ACC powerhouse Florida State are 1-2 in the ranking, followed by Auburn and Mississippi. Oregon is on the outside looking in at No. 5, and Alabama is sixth as teams jockey to become the four semifinalists in the first college football playoff.
