MLB:
When the Kansas City Royals were last in the postseason 29 years ago, they captured their lone World Series by coming back from three-games-to-one deficits in both the American League Championship Series and the Fall Classic. They have yet to lose a game in this postseason, reaching the World Series while becoming the first team in major league history to win their first eight playoff games.
The Royals are AL champs after completing a four-game sweep of the Baltimore Orioles. Jason Vargas combined with three relievers on a four-hitter and the Royals took advantage of a Baltimore miscue to score twice in the first inning of a 2-1 victory over the Orioles.
Meanwhile in San Francisco, the Giants downed the St. Louis Cardinals 6-4 giving them a 3-1 lead in the NLCS.
NHL:
Over on the ice in the NHL, Boston beat Detroit 3-2 in a shootout, Calgary edged Chicago 2-1 in overtime, and it was Arizona over Edmonton 7-4.
The AHL’s Adirondack Flames doused its new mascot just days after it was introduced as a firefighter-whuppin' flame from a devastating 19th-century fire.
The Post-Star of Glens Falls reports that Adirondack Flames president Brian Petrovek said Tuesday the organization is "extinguishing" Scorch and that they are currently designing a new mascot.
Last Thursday, the Calgary Flames' American Hockey League affiliate issued an apology just hours after introducing Scorch with a skit that showed him overpowering an actor portraying a firefighter. The team's back story for Scorch said he was the last surviving spark from an actual fire that destroyed much of Glens Falls in the 1860s.
Team officials said the skit was done "in poor taste."
NFL:
The New England Patriots turned their season around in plenty of time. It's probably too late for the New York Jets, especially if they drop their sixth straight game when they visit the heavily favored Patriots tonight at 8:25. Both teams will be without key players who suffered major injuries last Sunday.
NCAA:
The UConn women's basketball team opened practice yesterday with a lot of new faces, but the same old goal of winning a national title. The two-time defending women's champions lost center Stefanie Dolson and guard Bria Hartley to graduation, but have reloaded with the nation's top recruiting class. Four freshmen join a strong core of veterans.
