In the NFL, the Miami Dolphins dominated the second half on the way to a 33-20 win over the New England Patriots. Knowshon Moreno rushed for 134 yards and a touchdown, and Ryan Tannehill threw for two scores for the Dolphins. It was New England's first loss in an opener since 2003. The New York Jets beat the Oakland Raiders 19-14 yesterday. Chris Ivory burst through a few tackle attempts for a 71-yard touchdown run midway through the fourth quarter, and the Jets' defense clamped down on Oakland rookie quarterback Derek Carr. Geno Smith threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Chris Johnson as the Jets sent the Raiders to their 14th straight loss in the Eastern time zone. Buffalo edged Chicago with a field goal in overtime, 23-20.
Elsewhere Cincinnati beat Baltimore 23-16, Pittsburgh won against Cleveland 30-27, Philadelphia bested Jacksonville 34-17, Minnesota topped St. Louis 34-6, Atlanta beat New Orleans 37-34 in overtime, Tennessee trumped Kansas City 26-10, Houston won against Washington 17-6, Carolina beat Tampa Bay 20-14, San Francisco bested Dallas 28-17, and it was Denver over Indianapolis 31-24.
Two games tonight on Monday Night Football, at 7:10 the New York Giants take on the Detroit Lions followed by the San Diego Charges versus the Arizona Cardinals.

Serena Williams has capped her third straight U.S. Open title by downing Caroline Wozniacki 6-2, 6-3. Williams never dropped more than three games in any of her 14 sets in the tournament. Her sixth Open title gives her 18 Grand Slam singles championships, tying Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova for fourth all time. Kei Nishikori will face Marin Cilic in the men’s U.S. Open Grand Slam Finals tonight at 5.

In Major League Baseball, in the American League, (on Derek Jeter day at Yankee stadium) Kansas City blanked the Yankees 2-0, Toronto beat Boston 3-1, Baltimore edged Tampa Bay 7-5 in 11, the Angels blew out Minnesota 14-4, Texas won against Seattle 1-0, Cleveland blanked the White Sox 2-0, and it was Houston over Oakland 4-3.
The New York Yankees honored retiring captain Derek Jeter with a 45-minute ceremony that included appearances by NBA great Michael Jordan and baseball ironman Cal Ripken Jr. Jeter thanked people a dozen times as he spoke to a capacity crowd at Yankee Stadium for about 3 minutes before Sunday's 2-0 loss to Kansas City. The 14-time All-Star is retiring after this season.
In the National League, the Mets defeated Cincinnati 4-3, Washington edged Philadelphia 3-2, St. Louis bested Milwaukee 9-1, Pittsburgh topped the Cubs 10-4, the Dodgers won against Arizona 7-2, and it was Colorado over San Diego 6-0.
In interleague play, Detroit beat San Francisco 6-1.

Atlanta Hawks co-owner Bruce Levenson has confirmed that he is selling his controlling interest in the team, thanks in part to an inflammatory email he wrote two years ago. Levenson said he wrote the email in an attempt "to bridge Atlanta's racial sports divide," but his divisive comments, included his theory that Hawks black fans kept white fans away. Levenson made the admission a month after Donald Sterling lost control of the Los Angeles Clippers following his racially-insensitive remarks.
