Officials in Winooski, Vermont have adopted a resolution to move the city toward formal status as a sanctuary city for immigrants that are in the country illegally.
The City Council on Monday adopted the resolution put forward by Mayor Seth Leonard that authorizes policy development to make Winooski a sanctuary city.

Sanctuary cities refer to municipalities that don't use their resources to enforce federal immigration law or that prohibit law enforcement from asking people about their immigration status.

The Burlington Free Press reports the city's interim manager expressed concerns it could risk losing just under $200,000 in federal funding.

Winooski is the second Chittenden County city to recently express support for the designation. Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger said last week he wants to make the city a sanctuary city.
