A Williamstown, Massachusetts man considered a leader of a heroin ring in Northern Berkshire County is being held on $300,000 bail following a most recent drug charge.

The Berkshire County District Attorney’s office says38-year-old Ernest Harvin pleaded not guilty in Berkshire Superior Court Tuesday to one count of heroin possession with the intent to distribute. The Berkshire Eagle reports police found 300 bags of heroin during a May search of his Henderson Road home conducted by the Berkshire County Drug Task Force.

Berkshire County Sheriff Tom Bowler has said drug trafficking is an ongoing issue for law enforcement.

“Opiate use has really become a concern,” Bowler said. “It’s on the rise and that’s grabbed everybody’s attention.”

Harvin also faces a slew of earlier charges including kidnapping, firearm and other drug charges dating back to 2013. He has been convicted of attempted murder in New York State.
