Westchester County Exec Says SALT Questions Unanswered During Shutdown

In New York, Democratic Westchester County Executive George Latimer was at his county’s airport Tuesday to criticize the partial government shutdown and its effect on Transportation Security Administration employees. He says this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Latimer, who stood with Democratic Congresswoman Nita Lowey in his criticism, says the shutdown’s effects for Westchester extend well beyond TSA workers. For example, he says county residents could really use some help from the IRS.

“In a year where the SALT deduction has been taken away, and many Westchester residents — we estimate 38 percent of the residents of Westchester are going to be negatively affected — we need people to be on the other end of that hotline at IRS to help answer questions that are coming up this year that have never come up before because of the change in system,” Latimer says. “And they’re not there now because of this shutdown.”

He refers to the state and local tax deduction that has been capped at $10,000.
