Republican Gov. Phil Scott says he plans to call lawmakers back to the Statehouse next week to prevent what he says is an unnecessary property tax increase on Vermonters.

Scott sent a letter to legislative leaders Tuesday saying he intended to call the session starting next Wednesday, May 23.

He has said he was left with no choice but to veto the budget and property tax bills after the measures passed by lawmakers over the weekend violated his promise to avoid any new taxes.

The budget passed both the House and Senate with overwhelming support from the three major parties.

Senate President Pro Tem Tim Ashe, a Democrat and Progressive, has said he hoped the governor would change his mind and sign both bills.
