An event kicking off a number of volunteer activities in Westchester County to commemorate the victims and heroes of September 11 took place Tuesday at Pace University.

Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino and Executive Director of The Volunteer Center of United Way Alisa Kesten joined with the provost of Pace University, and Pace students, to write thank you notes to American soldiers and police officers. The event was part of the formal kick off of “9/11: Serve & Remember,” featuring more than 25 service events at area nonprofit organizations continuing through September 11. The culmination of Serve & Remember is a day of activity at Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla, at the site of Westchester’s September 11th memorial. The county’s formal memorial ceremony takes place at twilight, with a dedication of a Ground Zero beam, which will be permanently placed at the memorial, The Rising.
