Vermont Utility Certified As Socially Conscious

Green Mountain Power

Vermont's largest electric utility has been formally recognized as one  of the world's socially conscious companies by winning certification as a B Corporation, meaning it has met a high standard of overall social and environmental performance.

Green Mountain Power is the first utility in the world to receive such a certification.

GMP officials were joined Monday at the utility's headquarters in Colchester by Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, the founders of Ben & Jerry's ice cream, which was among the first companies to build a social mission into its goals.

B Corp co-founder Jay Coen Gilbert says GMP is now one of 22 B Corps in Vermont and among 1,165 such companies in 37 countries.

He says the utility could be an example for utilities across the United States and the world.
