Vermont officials from the Bennington region say increasing train access could be an economic boon.

Jim Sullivan of the Bennington County Regional Commission tells The Bennington Banner that it's "absolutely critical" for more train connectivity because it's a cost-effective way to transport people and goods.

Joann Erenhouse of the Bennington Area Chamber of Commerce says that New York City executives could potentially live in Southern Vermont and commute by train once or twice a week. Erenhouse also says tourists could more easily visit Vermont.

A two-state rail study recommends a train line through Mechanicville and Hoosick Junction, N.Y., to North Bennington, Manchester and Rutland, Vt.

A public hearing on the project will be April 3 at Arlington Memorial High School.
