A Vermont National Guard unit is heading to southwest Asia.

Officials say the air ambulance unit will deploy in June for a mission that could involve serving in combat zones. The Charlie Company unit will deploy with six Black Hawk helicopters. Members will perform medical evacuations to support the Missouri National Guard's 35th Combat Aviation Brigade as part of Operation Spartan Shield.

The Burlington Free Press reports deployment includes about 60 members of the unit. Deployments typically last about a year.
