Vermont House Seeks To Protect Kids From Toxics

The Vermont House has given final approval to a bill to protect children from exposure to toxic chemicals.

The House voted 120 to 22 on Wednesday to advance a bill that would give the commissioner of health the power to require products containing certain chemicals to be labeled, or to ban the chemicals. Those decisions would follow recommendations by a special advisory board and be reviewed by a legislative committee.

The bill starts with a list of chemicals of concern that is borrowed from Washington state, which has a similar law.

The main sponsor, Rep. David Deen, says states are getting involved because the federal government hasn't done enough to protect people from exposure to toxic chemicals.
