The Vermont judiciary and the attorney general's office are warning about a telephone scam in which people are told they missed jury duty and are facing arrest.

Residents of Chittenden County have received calls from a person claiming to be from the sheriff's office or from the "Chittenden Court House" claiming that to avoid arrest, they must pay a fine of several hundred dollars via a prepaid money card.

The calls are coming from outside Vermont.

In March, residents in Rutland County reported receiving similar calls.

People who receive the calls should make note of the telephone number and any statements made by the caller and then file a complaint with the attorney general's office consumer assistance program.
