Vermont Bans Anti-Gay Therapy

wikipedia commons

Vermont is banning the use of what's called "conversion therapy," a practice aimed at changing young people's sexual orientation or gender identity.
Governor Peter Shumlin signed the bill into law Wednesday, saying Vermont will continue to stand up to hatred and bigotry. He says, "It's absurd to think that being gay or transgender is something to be cured of."

Vermont joins California, Illinois, New Jersey, Oregon, and Washington, D.C. in enacting such a law.

A similar ban looked likely in New Hampshire after both chambers passed it. But the proposal is likely dead after last-minute negotiating to kill it this week.

Earlier this year New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced planned regulations that would bar insurance coverage for the therapy for minors.
Vermont's ban takes effect on July 1.
