Attorney General William Sorrell calls it a good day for Vermont. That's his reaction to the U.S. Supreme Court turning aside a challenge to Vermont's campaign finance law, letting a lower court's decision stand.

The challenge was to state law provisions restricting the ability of activist groups to set up separate arms to avoid political contribution limits.

Sharon Toborg of the Vermont Right to Life Committee, which brought the legal challenge, says the group is disappointed.

The case involved Right to Life's effort to set up a separate political arm to make what are termed independent contributions to political candidates. Judge William Sessions of the U.S. District Court in Burlington found there was too much organizational overlap to call Right to Life's Fund for Independent Political Expenditures truly independent.
