Vermont U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy says schools are one of the best places to educate children and their families about the value of healthy, nutritious lifestyles.

Leahy made the comments Monday during a visit to the Milton elementary and middle school where he highlighted the proposed Farm to School Act of 2015.

Leahy says the Milton school's Farm to School program is a national model. It links local agriculture with the growing demand for healthy and nutritious meals.

The proposal would increase the mandatory funding level of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm to School Grant Program from $5 million to $15 million.

Milton students and school staff have twice visited the White House at the invitation of First Lady Michelle Obama to showcase the school's Farm to School program.
